I called The Chatham Bookseller regarding books I wanted to sell, primarily because they advertised buying and selling used, out of print, and rare books. I brought the books in - a combination of a number of old, possibly rare books and some contemporary hardcover books. The two men working there took a some time to go through the books. In the end, they made two small stacks of what they were interested in - old books in one pile, new books in the other, and offered $35 for ALL which worked out to less than $5 per book. I passed on the offer because I had seen on the screen when one of the men was checking prices that one of my old books was listed for quite a bit more than the average of what I was offered, or even the total. The next day I took just the old books to a diffferent used book shop. The owner selected virtually the same books for purchase. He then spent a great deal of time checking various sources online and in some reference books and ended up offering me $170, specifically $150 for the one book I had seen listed on the screen at The Chatham Bookseller.
While the Chatham Bookstore is a pleasant place to shop and may be fine for selling current books, I do not recommend selling old or possibly rare books that may be of higher value there unless you are knowledgeable and know their true value.
Update: The business is correct. They did not receive the photos I sent. I made a mistake in their email address. My apologies. Also, I think if my books did not pique their interest or they have limited purchasing funds at the moment I could be told that. I would expect knowledgeable sellers to identify a book(s) of unusual value and to make...
Read moreI am writing about Chatham Booksellers in Chatham ,N J. I was looking for a book about Berkeley Heights, N J. "From the Passaick to the Wachunks" which I saw on Facebook. We lived in Berkeley Heights during the time the book was written. 1977 during the bicentennial. My son Arthur's picture is in the book. I decided to see if I could find a bookstore in Chatham which might have used books. I called the number listed and a very nice person answered, Mr. Mann. I told him what I was looking for and he said he thought he might have that book in the basement! He checked and called me back and said he did have it. I asked him if I could order it and have it sent to my son. He said "Yes". I think it will be a neat birthday present. His birthday is February 12. Thank you. Mr Mann. Sincerely,...
Read moreAn amazing and a rare gem. What a treat it was to shop at this diamond of a bookstore. Shops like this are all too rare these days but so badly needed. It was a pleasure to meet the owner - a very pleasant gentleman who genuinely cares about his work and customers. I found several long out of print books and a few friends from years gone by who I look forward to visiting once again. I couldn’t be more impressed and look forward to returning to in the very...
