Flynn's arcade is a great night out for a group of games or even to get some solo time in on the sticks! The atmosphere is cool, the staff is extremely pleasant and the game selection is solid.
In the interest of constructive criticism, there are minor issues if you're a nerd like me.
I was a little disappointed that the majority of the capcom fighting games were outfitted with Happ buttons and sticks, but that's preferential fighting game nerd stuff that doesn't actually factor into my review score.
Some of the marquees were mislabeled and/or cabinet graphics were poor quality. The bezels on the Third Strike machine were barely distinguishable and I'm not sure I've experienced disappointment in an arcade like sitting down for a game of Guilty Gear (a favorite game, never played it in an arcade setting before) and finding out it's Melty Blood. Again though, these are preferential, minor nitpicks and are intended as constructive criticism.
The only thing that warrants the actual docking of a review star is a grey area, but ultimately enough due to the execution more than the concept. Some of these machines are run on emulators. In a setting where you're paying admission and not putting coins into individual machines, I think it's acceptable. Poor emulation is never acceptable. The Mortal Kombat 3 machine was an abomination. A 16:9 monitor on a 4:3 emulated console version of the game. The pixels looked gross and the screen tearing was prominent. At least one of the machines was running on Pandora's Box and it feels like the line between that and charging people to play 3/4 1up Arcade cabs is very fine.
The review sounds more negative than my experience actually was because I care! I really loved the atmosphere and the review is a (poor) effort to express my gratitude for establishments working to preserve the arcade legacy while still holding that preservation to a solid standard.
The place was great, prices were on point and the staff was wonderful, but some of the emulation based machines need a reevaluation. Swap out pandoras boxes with cheap mini PCs running up to date emulators with a pleasant front end (would cost less than $150) and the spot would be 5 stars. Regardless, if I was local then I'd be a regular here, even if just...
Read moreWe came across Flynn’s at a booth during Comic Con and signed up for a movie premiere event they were putting on for Ghostbusters. GREAT EVENT with a full ghost busting crew with Slimer and they even made 3D printed goodies to take home. A week later, we decided to check out the arcade itself as the first event was so great. Their location itself is like an arcade bar I’ve been to, though they do not serve liquor, only wine, beer, cider, and seltzers, plus non-alcohol beverages and snacks. All of their food and drinks were such a great price. The big plus about this place though is that it’s family friendly. It was awesome to hang out with my kids at a place that’s not catered to just kids, but to adults as well. It was definitely a blast from the past with a lot of the games. There was also an event that evening that we stayed for. They brought Bam Margera in to sign merch and to take pictures. I wasn’t sure how the in-house event would go as there was a decent amount of people still playing games in the arcade, but they had a system where they had a line outside and called people in by groups so it worked out perfectly. It wasn’t overly crowded inside like I’ve seen with meet and greets at other places either. They’ll definitely be seeing us back there soon and even though we’re about 30 minutes from the arcade, we will be getting their monthly unlimited game pass because it’s...
Read moreThis place gets a full 5 from me for so many reasons, but mainly because of how authentic it is. After years of going in and right back out of what I call "ticket game" arcades, I began to lose hope that I would ever be able to see a real deal arcade , you know the type, the ones with cabinets of classic games from the time when game developers would release to arcades before home consoles. It's been a very long time since I experienced one, and I had fears that I would be disappointed visiting flynns thinking I would encounter ticket games. Boy I was so wrong. Flynn's is a gaming lounge as much as it is a genuine arcade, I now look forward to my free time to go visit since they have so many of the great '90s fighting games I grew up playing at arcades. The owner is very friendly and enthusiastic about games! They have weekly events and tournaments and a very active gaming community ... I am very happy to have found it, in some ways, even thankful because it has saved me from feeling lost from what I once...
