Whenever I travel, one of my must-see places is always the LYS. I have to stop in every one I see, since I can never seem to find them near my home! Thankfully though, when picking up medicine for my pet at Yost pharmacy, I noticed Main Street Yarns, right next door! I was absolutely thrilled to find a yarn shop close to home, and I stopped by as soon as I could.
The first time I stopped by there was a sale going on with 3 stuffed laundry baskets full of yarn, all heavily discounted and ranging in price and material, and there was a knitting group right next to the sale table! I felt like a kid in a candy store seeing all those gorgeous yarns from all over the world in person, and the knitting group was full of friendly women who, despite not working there, were happy to point out different sections of the store that might have been of interest. At the time I don't think the owners noticed me walk in since I used the street entrance instead of the back entrance (I've since learned haha), but it wasn't long at all before I was asked what brought me in. The workers were more than happy to ask me what project(s) I was working on, and if there was anything they could help me with.
Another thing I'd like to mention is the topics discussed in the knitting group and store never make you feel unwelcome, since there is a store policy of promoting "hygge," which is the Norwegian word for "cosiness." No politics, negativity, or rudeness are allowed, making for a very calming environment. :-)
The first time I visited I bought a Churchmouse fingerless mitts pattern, and my plan was to use some handmade yarn I had at home. Well, it turns out it was too chunky, and I didn't have nearly enough of it anyway, so I stopped back in a couple weeks later. While I didn't have the pattern with me since I was just at work, the woman working there at the time was more than happy to help me find the pattern in the store's pattern book! We couldn't find it in the store, so she looked on ravelry and found it. They even had the exact yarn mentioned in the pattern in store, so I bought a gorgeous hank of alpaca/merino yarn for $14. I also thought I had the right needles at home but of course those were already in use, so I bought some handcrafted wooden needles here as well. I was trying to decide between a bamboo set of DPNs and a wooden set, and one of the owners came over to help me choose. Those are now my favourite needles, and I plan to buy more in other sizes soon!
The whole experience was very nice, and while I was browsing (I always take a very long time to browse) I was asked a few times if I was finding everything okay, and also if I needed a basket. Overall, I would absolutely recommend yarn lovers to stop by Main Street Yarns, as they won't be...
Read moreWhile visiting my daughter in Kings Mills, last weekend, she asked if I wanted to visit the yarn shop I had read about online that was close to her. So we arrived mid afternoon on Saturday, Aug 11th and ironically, during the annual yarn crawl. The shop was filled with women working on projects, looking for yarn, or just browsing. In the midst of all this, a really nice woman at the counter asked if I needed help and I told her I was just looking....but I've never walked out of a yarn shop empty handed in my 60 years of knitting and crocheting. I decided that I would knit a tunic type top that was popular last year online and told the woman about the pattern and from that point on, she graciously helped my find the pattern, find yarn and then figured out how much I would need to make this for my 3 yr. old granddaughter. She pointed out a yarn that was on sale and I bought was left on the shelf in the colorway. There was a wonderful selection of yarn in all price ranges as well as knitting needles and other knitting notions. I did not see any crochet items, but that was fine with me as I have more than the average person needs. I think the lady who helped me said her name was Donna, and if not, I apologize. Both she and her partner were warm, courteous and extremely helpful. It is a lovely shop, and I look forward to visiting again in the future. Next time, I will be a little more extravagant, because that is what a LYS is all about...new, exciting, beautiful and in many cases, hand crafted and dyed yarn. Thanks, for a very nice visit and...
Read moreAbsolutely WONDERFUL yarn shop! The owner and all the staff are just fantastic! This shop has an excellent selection of yarns, including high end luxury brands and quality yarn manufacturers! They also have a good selection of project bags and nice variety of notions too! The shop atmosphere is always pleasant and you never get the feeling that you are being "watched" or feel like you are pressured into buying something! The owner and staff remember their customers by name and ask about how they are doing in their own personal lives if they are a frequent customer! My favorite thing is you can just c'mon in and browse the new yarns they have for future project that you have in mind. The front table which features a particular type of yarn always is a highlight and always looks so appealing! I live in Hamilton OH and this shop is always worth the trip to make out to Mason! Keep up the awesome work....you're customers...
