ā€œShe may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kidā€ - Han Solo The Plymouth van we rented from Kahului Auto Rentals may not do the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs, but it did get us safely through many great Maui adventures. The van was reliable, clean and fresh smelling (no wet Wookiee odours or tons of fur). The pickup and drop-off instructions provided by the company were super clear and detailed. The company dropped off the van in short-term parking as promised, with a full tank of gas and a pre-paid parking ticket. We set coordinates and were off to explore Maui before other fellow airline passengers had even got to the car rental booths. Returning the van is just as easy: drop off passengers and luggage, briefly contemplate leaving them there and start a new life on Maui, leave the car at short-term parking and text a photo of the van to the company. Simple. Exceptional customer service story (cue sentimental music): Waiting at our gate, reminiscing about the fun times we had on Maui with our KAR van when a voice snapped me to reality - ā€œFlight XYZ to Vancouver…has been cancelled.ā€ Noooo! While scrambling to make plans about where and how to stay over, we remembered ā€œAh, the van! it’s still in the parking lot.ā€ We called the company and left a voicemail. A few minutes later (this was 10:30 pm) we got a call back saying we can extend our rental for a few days. So awesome!!! If you like driving a practical vehicle and want to save some serious cash, give Kahului Auto Rentals a call. Highly recommended!! Don’t everybody thank me at once. šŸ˜€

I just drove off the lot and I am shocked and disappointed. My rental car is very old and it does not smell like a typical rental car. It smells stuffy and old. And there is a sign in the little office that says, ā€œNo refunds.ā€ I wish I had gone to a regular car rental company. The 4.7 Google rating for this place is a hoax. Only a tiny handful of the reviews are honest. Here’s an example of an honest review: Jacob Hatcher Local Guide · 48 reviews · 12 photos a year ago ā€œJust another dirt lot taking advantage of desperate people with bad credit and giving them cars they can't afford with super high interest rates.ā€ Thank you Jacob for the honest review! I have good credit but I got fooled by the fake Google rating. Now look at the company’s response to Jacob: Response from the owner 8 months ago ā€œI don't think you ever use our services! PLEASE GO COLLECTING YOUR GOOGLE POINTS SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!ā€ Well of course Jacob never used these services! He’s smart! He is a local and he knows what he’s talking about. It is a dirt lot with some gravel on it. I have no idea what Google points are, but I suspect the friends of the owner collected a whole bunch of them when they wrote these fake reviews.

The staff was friendly and responsive. The self serve pickup (car left unlocked with a code for a wheel lock texted to me) was a first for me. Gas was a bit above 1/4 tank. In the end the van we rented made the road to Hana round trip. Cosmetically the sienna was in rough shape with big scrapes on all sides and the rear bumper cover partially detached. The inside could use a good shampooing. My biggest gripe was the front tires were both very low. The TPMS sensors weren’t functional, I had to fill gas immediately anyway and checked both front tires were below 20 PSI and were also quite low on tread at the edges. Lastly, there were roaches in the vehicle. Kids got a laugh but mother traveling with us was disgusted. I did text my contact and sent photos to the company. They shrugged it off. In all it would have been a good value if they paid more attention to service and the condition of the vehicle. If I’d known in advance what I was getting I would have rented elsewhere.

Don’t even know where to begin. First off I’ll start by saying I knew I wasn’t going to be getting a luxury rental here - that it was going to be older and more run down; however -it’s a rental car company. All cars should be safe and should drive The first car I got - a Nissan Altima, headlights were so fogged over they were basically non-existent. I had to rely on other people’s lights or the brights when I could. I picked up at night after hours so was stuck with for the night. I messaged him the next day and he told me to come swap it out The next car seemed okay at first, though still old and beat up. But on the second day after spending the day sight seeing we tried to go back home and the car wouldn’t start. Note - I flipped the headlight stick around to double check that and make sure it wasn’t on but in fact we hadn’t driven at night so we didn’t use them. I called him and he came and brought me a new car This was another Nissan. He brought it during the day and again seems okay. Come night time and...guess what! Same issue as the first car. I actually had to make sure and check the license plate to make sure it wasn’t the same exact one. Since that was going to be the last time I should be driving at night I just dealt with it that night. The next day we got up (it had rained the night before) and the floor boards were wet. The windows were all closed. So there’s some kind of leak somewhere. Just decided to deal with it. Wouldn’t hopefully affect anything. Went out sightseeing again and got in to start car and it wouldn’t recognize the key fob!!! It took about 2 hours and waking away, Messi g with the battery and re-entering the car and for some reason it decided to work again when I had him on the phone for the second time. We dropped off the car at the airport and I inquired about a refund because frankly the whole thing was ridiculous and wasted valuable vacation time and was just unsafe. He told me he’s not responsible for the headlights and to contact Nissan!?!?! No sir! You own the car and are the one renting it out. YOU are responsible for its upkeep and safety

I like supporting local businesses unfortunately I had the worst experience with Kahului Auto Rentals. I rented a vehicle for a week and soon after I picked up the vehicle, I noticed that it was not in great condition. I’m okay with older vehicles but this felt unsafe to drive. The hubcap fell off when I was driving at 25 mph which was startling and the car felt erratic to drive. I later found out that I was correct in my assumptions that the vehicle was unsafe because it had been leaking massive amounts of oil while I was driving it. I had contacted the company multiple times and was told to just return the car when originally slated in the same condition I received it. I eventually pressured someone from KAR into trading the vehicle after explaining the Airbnb host I had had alerted me that there was a massive amount of oil that she had to clean off of her driveway from my parking spot. Trying to trade the car was a huge hassle as no one was working for the weekend and apparently no one was able to bring me a different car. I relayed that the vehicle was absolutely unsafe to drive and I was being told by KAR to drive it to the car lot. I refused to drive this car any longer and suggested they have it towed and to please bring me a vehicle. No one fulfilled that request. I then had to pay for my own ride to the lot and pick up another vehicle that had exposed wires by the drivers seat. This took me an entire day to ā€œresolveā€ and I was not really given much of a proper apology nor any reimbursement. I’m shocked that a local company wouldn’t have more concern over renting out a death trap to someone. If I had driven that car anymore that I did, I and or multiple persons would have been hurt. A faulty vehicle is nothing to sneeze at. I wish I could recommend this company but the customer service is nonexistent and I was given an absolute lemon that put the safety of myself and...

Im not gonna lie, im quite stunned with the flattering reviews. Our experience with this company was by far the worst. So where do I even begin? First the car that we picked wasnt even the right car to begin with. Our booking when I called them i confirmed a midsized sedan and they ended up giving me a bigger bulkier car which would have been better if it actually ran properly. The funny thing about this car was when i was up in the mountains making sure to honk at the other driver to alert them, the honk didnt work. The car did not come with a remote, and it ended up alarming the whole darn night when we parked somewhere to go eat just bc of a unlocking and locking the door. When i asked them about it, they simply said unlock the car and take everything in the car with you. Then I finally got really pissed when the radiator started leaking, I mean its not normal it does happen but our whole vacation was interrupted because of this piece of junk company. They are by far the worst. Some guy that I talked to when I told him about all these problems stated there is nothing he can do just cancel the reservation and we will refund your money back. I Explained in good length that A month before I started the service I was ensured a good car thats at least drivable and at least is a midsize sedan and does not have problems. The breaks on this darn car started screeching at one point and I thought we were pretty lucky it did not break down in the middle of the road. These people are an absolute travesty. If you want a piece of mind when renting a car choose the other guy, dont pick these fools. Ps they also ensure that gas is not filled prior to you using the car so as to waste your precious time trying to find a spot to fill...
