Fly Mokulele! Hassle here depends on the airline these days. Flying ‘Ohana by Hawaiian requires a trip through security which seems excessive with six TSA officers. Every hand was checked for bomb residue. Same routine as any big airport with removing shoes, belts, liquids and gels, tablets, laptops, and even all food. I decided to pay the extra $15 to check my bag that would easily have fit as free carry-on but contained a couple bottles over 3.4 oz. However, being a the tiniest of airports there’s absolutely need to arrive too early. I’d have had time to spare arriving 15 minutes before boarding. I was told by a TSA officer he always flies Mokulele Airlines because passengers flying on airplanes with 19 or fewer seats don’t have to go through TSA security. You can even walk on the plane with a 24-pack of beer! The airport has a cafe but the coffee there...

Tried to fly from Honolulu to Kapalua, my 11 o'clock flight gets cancelled, rescheduled to 4PM, that gets cancelled, rescheduled to 6:30PM into OGG airport. Very inconvenient since I already had a rental car through an airport connected to Kapalua.
From speaking to locals, Kapalua airport frequently does this and there's not much a customer can do - either cancel your flight and receive a refund, or if you complain to Customer Care they give you a travel voucher....but as a tourist, I'm not going to end up using this voucher...
Read moreIf you are staying in West Maui consider flying into Kapalua if you are coming in from Oahu or another island. I love saving the drive from Kahului and avoid any afternoon traffic coming through Lahaina. Airport is quick and Mokulele offers bi-hourly service from HNL and daily service from the other islands. Price is about the same as Kahului without the hassle. They fly the Cessna Caravan which offers great views from every seat in the plane.
