Miso Phat Sushi in West Maui offers a truly local sushi experience that's worth seeking out. The restaurant's commitment to freshness is evident in every bite, with much of the fish served caught by the owner himself. This farm-to-table (or rather, sea-to-plate) approach results in sushi of exceptional quality and flavor.
The menu showcases a variety of fresh, local fish, prepared with skill and attention to detail. Each dish we tried was a testament to the restaurant's dedication to quality ingredients and traditional sushi-making techniques.
One unique aspect of Miso Phat Sushi is its BYOB policy. While this might catch some diners off guard, it's actually a great opportunity to pair your meal with your favorite beverage. There's a convenient small convenience store next door for those who forget or decide last-minute to bring a drink.
The restaurant's location is ideal for tourists, within walking distance of many local resorts. However, it's important to note that they don't accept reservations. Instead, you can check in once you arrive. Be prepared for a potential wait, especially during peak hours. In our case, the wait was longer than expected, but the outstanding quality of the food made it worthwhile.
For those looking for a souvenir, Miso Phat Sushi has a cute selection of hats and shirts available in their gift shop. It's a nice touch that allows you to take a piece of your experience home with you.
One thing to keep in mind is the potential wait time. Given the restaurant's popularity and no-reservation policy, it's wise to plan accordingly and perhaps arrive early or during off-peak hours if possible.
Despite the wait, Miso Phat Sushi delivers on its promise of fresh, high-quality sushi. The combination of locally caught fish, skilled preparation, and a casual, BYOB atmosphere makes for a memorable dining experience.
In conclusion, if you're in West Maui and craving exceptional sushi, Miso Phat Sushi is definitely worth a visit. Just remember to bring your favorite beverage, pack some patience for potential waits, and prepare your taste buds for some of the freshest sushi you're likely to find on the...

Let me preface this review by saying that I normally do not eat seafood (on the mainland) due to it's lack of freshness. Since I'm in Hawaii and so close to the ocean I figured I would try out the fresh locally caught fish. This was a great decision.
Miso Phat is a very small restaurant (maybe 6 tables and a small bar). There is usually a wait, maybe 15 minutes when we came in around 7:30PM (the 2-tops turn very quickly). It's a BYOB eatery, so go next door after you check in and grab some sake or beers while you wait. There's a small section with (very cool) Miso Phat gear like shirts and hats and other stuff in the takeout/waiting area.
I came in with my girlfriend celebrating my 21st birthday after leaving the nearby beach. The wait staff were incredibly friendly and I felt like I was treated like a frequent customer on my first visit. The employees and manager were knowlegable, quick and aware of my needs before I even was. I ordered some local fish nigiri sushi and it was like no other sushi I've ever had. The sushi rice was awesome and the fish was buttery smooth with ABSOLUTELY NO FISHY TASTE. Paired with the sake from next door and the 80's/90's Rock music in the background I had one of the best culinary experiences I've ever had in my life. After the food came, my birthday ice cream arrived at the table along with many birthday wishes from all of the staff on the way out.
This was an experience I'll never forget. Thank you so much to the Miso Phat Family. You...
Read moreAVOID THIS RESTAURANT. Do not fall for the positive reviews if you have a decent bar for good sushi. You will be very disappointed. From the moment you walk in, the ambience tells you everything you need to know. Country music, sports games playing on the screens, tacky posters, and a repulsive menu with completely irrelevant names for different rolls. As for the food, there was absolutely nothing redeeming about it. The rice was overcooked, mushy, and unseasoned. All the rice rolls were pre-rolled like an assembly line while another chef packed them with fish and skimped out on other toppings. We ordered spicy ahi rolls that had no spice. Not even a tingle. The rice was packed on thick, so the ratio of rice to fish was completely off. My friend and I ended up picking the fish out of the roll because it was just too much rice. The unagi also tasted weird and like it was baked in an oven (which it was ) rather than roasted on a grill. I didn’t take any pictures because the food was so repulsive and I didn’t want to remember it. We both spent over $50 USD each for two sets of rolls and it was a complete waste of money. We were better off buying sushi from Foodland for 1/3 the price....
