Been here several times and have previous good experiences here.
This time I believe it was the owners son working. He greeted me with a "Hope you brought us a lot of money today". A little off putting but not a big deal. I told him I was wanting to get a filet and boneless ribeye. He proceeded to try and upsale me Tomahawk ribeyes and trying to get me to buy 3-4 more steaks for a "deal". I told him I only needed only the 2 steaks for dinner tonight. I told him I would like the filet cut to about 8-10oz range. He proceeded to cut a huge piece of filet around 12-14oz and responded by telling me he has nothing to gauge it off of and no way of knowing how big it is.. Which if your a butcher and have been doing it for any amount of time its not to hard to eyeball the cuts and get close to the correct OZs.
He then went to get my ribeye which I had already told him I was looking for about a 16oz ribeye and he again tried to talk me into a tomhawk or a bone in ribeye. He then grabbed dry aged ribeye (which I didn't know and is a lot more expensive then just a regular cut of ribeye) and cut a huge piece (about 26 oz) and wrapped it and then said I hope you have money because our card machine isn't working. Luckily I had cash which I don't typically carry and he should of informed me that before I even bought anything.
Probably won't be coming back which is a shame because the owner is very nice and the meats are good quality. The gentleman working just seemed a little off and was overall a weird...
Read moreLook....i don't wanna be mean, but the man who was running the counter today was extremely...weird.
It was my 1st time ever coming to this place since i normally goto Valpo Beef Mart and just wanted to try some place closer.
Upon entering, the gentleman running the counter was so...forthright about "how much money people were spending on the jerky" or anything involving spending money there which immediately made me uncomfortable. I then asked if theres a menu for prices which he replied "no our prices change everyday" ummm...ok? And then i asked if he had a price on chuck roast "we don't do those" how?! Oh but you'll sell ribeye steaks 26$ lbs?! Yeah no.
And then dear lord the jerky....yeah it was...ok but extremely dry. And again he wouldn't stop talking about how the people before me went to the atm and had to buy so much of it...
Finally i told him "ya know what lemme go talk to my sister about it" and he looks past the window and says "oh umm..looks like no one's in your car" That. That right there sealed the deal that i will never ever come here again and will resume just going to Valpo because at least i won't...
Read moreWent there because they advertised jerky in their window and asked for samples. I guess they typically don't offer samples like most places that sell jerky from the way the guy got oneness about it. Instead of saying so, he kept on throwing one-liners like, "or you could just buy some.", etc. Then he pulled some links off the shelf in satirical way. His demeanor was like, "Here! Have more stuff that you're not going to pay for." We didn't even ask for those. Feeling bad, I bought a few pieces of jerky but wish I hadn't. It was the hardest, driest jerky I've ever had. The guy even made a fuss when I tried to use a debit card and didn't have $6 on me. He tried you tell me it's a $20 minimum on card. Bottom line: if handing out samples isn't your business model, SAY SO! Don't shame your customers because they didn't know. I could've respected that. My family enjoys trying out different flavors of jerky and buying our favorite. Every place we've went that sells it has offered samples. We assumed Lange's was...
