This was the most incredible historical, artistic, political city tour experience that we've ever had. The highlight is, of course, Michelle Browder, one of the most important contemporary voices in America today. Michelle follows in the footsteps of thousands of great African Americans in Montgomery who fought for equity, justice and self-determination. On her tour and in person, she's every bit as funny, passionate and incisive as her TED talk. We learned a ton about who she is, and why this tour is so important to her: she's run for office three times, she's related to the famous Browder U.S. civil rights court case, she's involved in running youth programs for the community, and she comes from a background of justice organizing and political activism.
The tour itself does a great job of highlighting recent civil rights wins in Montgomery, but also tells the hidden stories and secret histories that aren't visible or celebrated in the city. Michelle customized the tour once she heard we were particularly interested in learning more about Indigenous history and criminal justice reform, plus she tailored her stories to connect our experiences with the Montgomery reality. Overall, we were so thrilled with this tour and we told all of our friends about it. Do yourself a favour and book...
Read moreThis tour is amazing!!! As a military person we are expected to know history and learn from it. We are especially expected to know the history within our fantastic country. Michelle does an outstanding job reminding us and enlighten us on the history from the civil war to the civil rights in Montgomery, Alabama. Right outside the gates of the historic Maxwell Air Force Base is the up and coming city of Montgomery and all the history it holds. Michelle opened my eyes. If you think you know the history of our country, I challenge you to sign up for Michelle’s tour. You will learn (probably sing) and marvel about the good, bad, ugly and beautiful history in Montgomery. You will undoubtedly be entertained, but more than anything, you will be a more knowledgeable and proud American...
Read moreI joined Michelle’s Selma-to-Montgomery tour and loved loved loved it. Michelle is a wealth of historical and local knowledge. I learned so much about the people and events leading up to the multiple match attempts to Montgomery, and we took an eye-opening visit to Selma, which has such a beautiful built environment and potential and people. Tip—racial injustice in the US is so complex. I believe there is a lot of guilt and need on white people’s part sometimes to explain their experience of civil rights, i.e., to convey they are not racist. Try to limit your outbound communication and really use Michelle, ask questions and listen more than you go on about how racially enlightened you are. That’s my recommendation...
