Southgate Baptist Church — Local services in Moore

The service I attended in November 2010 at 10:45 AM was contemporary. They were light on the drums and usual teenage-style of worship, but the overall mood and culture is certainly contemporary, with praise songs up on the projector screen for all to follow along. You'll also hear plenty of people saying "Amen" after the pastor makes a point during his sermon. The adult choir was dressed in their individual Sunday dress (no robes), and the congregation would clap whenever they finished a song (which always takes me back a bit. Is the choir there to lead worship toward God or be applauded by men for a performance for the congregation?). The service lasted about 1 hour and 20 minutes with no special events taking place. The people were friendly but no special attention was made to guests (such as myself) that I could discern.

My husband and I went to Southgate Baptist for assistance after the Moore Tornado. We were SO grateful for the kindnesses, food, tetanus shots and other assistance from this wonderful church and it's partners. We were so impressed with the people staffing the Mercy tent as well. They made sure we were fed, watered and assessed. We were checked to make sure we had our medications and a pack of first aid supplies. God's love is abundant. It's amazing to see the concentrated effort between all the churches to care for the people of Moore. We felt loved and cared for after leaving there and truly blessed. I visited this church for the first time and was welcomed by about five to ten people took the time to greet me, which I truly appreciated. The messages were thoughtful and well-delivered. I especially enjoyed the early Sunday school lesson—it was insightful, and aligned with what I typically look for in biblical teaching.

The main service leaned more contemporary than I’m used to. I understand many people connect deeply with this style, but I found it outside my comfort zone. The modern approach just didn’t resonate with me in the same way.
