Golden Dawn — Local services in New Kensington

This is a wonderful independent, local supermarket. Their prices are competitive with the "big boys," and their meat and produce are top quality. They've got a whole bunch of really friendly and helpful people working there as well.

What I really like is that even when the store is busy...and that's fairly often...you really don't spend a lot of time in the check-out line. There always seems to be enough registers open to handle the traffic, and the cashiers are really good.

It is a really great place to shop...unless you're planning on getting something from the deli. (Here's where that 5th star went to.) Unless you happen by the deli counter when there are no other customers there, you are going to spend a lot of time there. There have been times when there have been 4 people working the deli, and exactly 1 person waiting on people. The others are fussing with the prepared food, or making pasta salad or hoagies, and often there are 2 people on "clean up" detail. Which is fine, if you're not busy, but when there are 4 or 5 people at the counter and just one person waiting on them, it's not fair to either the customers, or the poor person trying to get these people their jumbo or chipped ham.

Other than that, Golden Dawn is a joy to shop at...deli counter and all, I do recommend it enthusiastically.

Edit: Just recently, new owners bought the store and "re-opened" (not that the store ever closed at all, but you know how that works) under new management. I can tell you that all the wonderful things I said about the store still apply. It's still a great place to do your grocery shopping, and the service at the deli...

It’s okay here. If you are close it’s good for a fast stop. It’s expensive with a lot of things. They also don’t have a lot of stuff we buy but you can probably find most grocery items. Nothing that would be considered unique. If that makes sense. Like if u wanted Chinese mustard you’re out of luck. Skin care products are scarce. If u want oranges and lettuce and some stuff like that they’ll have. I haven’t tried their steaks but we like really good cuts and doesn’t seem they’ll have that. I can’t say for sure. I’ll update if we ever buy steaks from here. If you are local and wanna have a fast stop this can work. Though just down the street are serval...

Although I've always enjoyed visiting Golden Dawn and found the prices to be fair, my latest experience fell short. Considering the rising incidents of gun violence, school shootings, and senseless killings, I deem it inappropriate for the quarter machines at the entrance to dispense miniature toy machine guns and rifles. Please remove these as they're not suitable for children and don't reflect positively on your establishment, so we can cultivate a community that promotes peace and...
