Brooklyn Mirage — Local services in New York

I’ll start by saying that 1 star is being generous after my first and only experience there last night. A group of 8, including myself, were put on a VIP list for the Galantis show. We were all traveling from out of state and obviously wouldn’t know the way that the facility operates. Myself and one other member got there later than the rest of the group and the staff were far from helpful. Keep in mind that the show had just started and the entrance queues were empty at this point. The ID check was rude and demeaning and was more involved with his personal phone conversation than worrying about his job. When we got to the wristband area, we explained to the lady that we had been put on a list and that our group was already there. She rudely dismissed us and said that she wasn’t in control of the wristbands for VIP. Not once did someone explain that there were digital wristbands and that we had to link them to our debit cards (the only person who said anything about the wristbands was the guy near the merch area, but didn’t reference if it was needed for beverages at the bar). Once we got to the actual performance area, we realized that this was far from anywhere we wanted to continue to be. The bartender (blonde gal) was stationary, inhospitable, and overall a gross representation of any bartender in the hospitality industry. We ordered two bottles of water while we tried to get the VIP thing situated. She shoved them at us and they fell to the ground. She scoffed and moved onto the next customer after ushering us out of the way for the next guest (she was stationary and unwilling to work the bar top - or at least the person half a step to our left). Since we hadn’t figured out the wristband situation, we had our VIP friend scan her band. Come to find out, it was $15 for two bottles of standard supermarket water (what is maybe $5 for a 24 pack). I understand the markup for food and beverage at bars and event spaces - but this was completely unacceptable and a rip off. Security was unwilling to offer suggestions to remedy our situation and kept ushering us away instead of offering any kind of help. Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. One of the best places to go to check out music acts and Dj Sets from around the world. One of the few massive places that have an incredible Soundsystem, coat check anytime of the season, a separate room for multiple experiences, a food court and power stations to hydrate and recharge, with a unique space that makes it the experience different everytime. The recent redesign of the mainstage brings Brooklyn Mirage the best place to hear and see live acts. Why the 4 stars?

Security ODDDDDD’s at the place. Totally understandable for the amount of music fans that arrive for acts on a night basis but the “TSA checkpoint” energy along with a few other things involving security is the reason.

Space also plays into a 4 star review. This venue is built like a Castle and yet there is NEVER enough room to get down and dance. I’m always shoulder to shoulder, two stepping it out, wish is cool, but how about some footwork without spilling my drink everywhere and on everyone.

Plan accordingly, always hydrate, find an exit route that meets up with you and your friends, CHARGE YOUR PHONE,walk a few blocks away from the venue to get your Uber or left and you...

I've only been to the mirage during its most recent iteration (the giant outdoor screen setup) instead of what used to exist. The pros: great bathrooms, good seating (if only one event is going on), food options, lots different bars. In theory it should be an amazing time however in practice its ruined by their decision making.

Something new this year is keeping the top general area portion closed, the vip areas are still open (which means they have the ability to allow people in that section). Getting rid of that GA section forces everyone into the main floorspace it gets seriously crowded. While even when people are up there the bottom area can be full, its nice to have the option to escape the sea of people.

On a given night (depending on the artist, or how mainstream), the vibes vary but I think the artist brings the crowd, not the venue so people tend to confuse that fact. Sometimes when the starts align it really can be a great time. Some easy fan friendly decisions could make this the premiere electronic venue in NYC if they actually cared.
