Took the time drive across town to Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. while on a visit from Montreal this past Sunday. I was there to find materials for my 6 y/o son's halloween costume, and was astounded by the staff's complete lack of customer care or attention. I stood there for nearly ten minutes as several staff members were having heated, loooong form chats on minutia completely unrelated to product or the store. I felt totally invisible though I was standing right in front of them, and was clearly waiting for someone to ask me if they could help. No acknowledgement came, though it seemed I was the only real customer in the store. It was embarrassing and demeaning. I am a patient person, but I finally just left without saying a word. Needless to say I will never return and would not recommend them. I am sure that most of what they have can be easily and less expensively found online. I got what I needed online at a good price, with great customer care and I am glad that I did.....[update - thank you for the reply and for letting them know. I didn't know they were all volunteers. I started my career as a volunteer too. I am sorry to be so negative, but that's just the way it went down. Thanks...
Read moreLooking forward to checking out this shop soon. I grew up in San Francisco, the OG 826. Some of these negative comments are clearly from people who didn't bother to look up the website or read any of the reviews. The store front is meant to be gimmicky, targeting younger school age children. Though some adults may enjoy it too, depending on your personality. The proceeds support the 826 nonprofit which provides tutoring and literacy programs for children. There are locations throughout the country and each adjoining storefront features a different theme. NYC is superheroes. San Francisco is pirates. Don't know what the other stores are. I visited the one in LA but can't remember its theme anyway, if you're treating this as a normal retail space and expecting dirt cheap prices, you're missing the whole point. Cheers! Be kind...
Read moreDave Eggers has created the 826 non-profit organization dedicated to helping students develop their reading and writing skills. The tutoring center in the NYC area is actually behind this superhero store! While the items inside are whimsical and unpractical, for a child it is probably a dream come true - not to mention, the proceeds go to the tutoring center. They sell capes, x-ray glasses, particle guns, bulk containers like Kryptonite and Omnipotence, as well as McSweeney’s books. There is a cape-testing wind tunnel and a Devillainizer cage, so if you have children or are baby-sitting any, this place will be sure to foster their...
