Lovely space but I have never been in a library in which the staff themselves are SUPER loud. They don't make any effort to speak quietly at all, quite to the contrary. There seems to be no awareness for the fact that they are in a library. I'm not saying they need to act like church mice, I'm saying they are LOUD. They also seem to think their back office area is sound proof. They are even loud compared to typical office chatter. Much louder than a coffee shop. They sound like they are working in an outdoor depot. The space is cavernous and therefore echoes. They'd be loud even without that affect, but with it, you can't escape (I tried). One of them clunks around in loud heels providing a stiletto back-beat to cacophony.
The irony is that most library visitors are quiet and carry themselves with the soft demeanor that is typical of, well, libraries. However, the staff's behavior is contagious, and any time a guest interacts with them (say to look for a book), they start conversing loudly together, like they're out on the street or something. The whole reason people keep it down in libraries is bc they're met with quiet upon entering.
Btw, I'm a young male and don't mind a bit of noise. This is just ridiculous and really annoying if you're actually trying to get some work done, study, or read a book. There is a difference between the constant drone of a busy space, and the incessant piercing STAFF voices. I'm wearing nice Sony noise cancelling headphones, with a sound blocker playing, and it's not quite cutting it.
These people, the contra-librarians (rsrs), are oblivious. Perhaps a quart low. Strange, unordinary, annoying af,...
Read moreExcellent building! The staff is knowledgeable and have the ability to do their job efficiently and thoroughly. Sadly they are very on-edge and basically angry. They are obviously oppressed or the administration has no concept of staff development. They definitely need to work on their people skills. It is important to identify that it is not all of the librarians but it is the majority. The well managed art is tastefully done, engaging, and on point! The watercolor class by Laura Eliason is an amazing experience that is both fulfilling and relaxing. Ms. Eliason is a great asset to our community and the library. The temperature is sometimes too hot and there is poor air circulation. The children’s book selection is fabulous. The janitor is a very kind, caring, and applied person. Unfortunately the NYC uniformed security guard is a “battle axe”. She should NEVER be allowed to speak to anyone. It seems that she believes she is working in a maximum security prison’s death row section. To say she possesses the tact of Atila the Hun would not come close to the hatred she exudes. When she is not predating on whoever she sets sights on she can be found standing on the top step of the main entrance gossiping very loudly on her personal phone...basically she needs an excessive amount of development. We are very grateful to have...
Read moreI aksed the blusterous dude at the front desk for a replacement for my old Where The Wild Things Are library card since a piece of it had broken off somehow. I asked for the card with the artwork of the people on the C train, one of them in a suit reading a paper that says "I AM A MAN". When he handed me back my driver's license I felt judged. This is a fabrication of my own self-concious, probably, because it appears that I've opted to have organ donor status on my license. In truth however, I've always been paranoid about the organ donor registry. In my opinion, that little red heart is a mark of naivety rather than altruism. But whoever processed my paperwork at the DMV checked the box for me anyway, probably as some kind of joke. I saw the headline in the New York Times this afternoon about how doctors and paramedics are rushing the extraction of organs of patients that otherwise still might be saved. I don't even have to read the article. I've been sure of this malpractice for years. Anyway, to whoever that dude is at the front desk, I appreciate your help. I'll probably be coming back for a plain-blue library card (although I'm keeping the new artsy keychain thing) after I've...
