Discriminatory leasing practices and treatment by staff.
My fiancé and I are not married yet. We explained this multiple times yet we’re badgered for a marriage certificate. We had to explain they cannot deny us the apartment for simply not being married. After that, they allowed us to continue the process.
We were eligible for a 3BR/2BA apartment at the 165% AMI tier. However we were only allowed to view an apartment at the 125% tier. The 125% AMI was super small. It’s so cramped that there is a bathroom in the kitchen. It is unsanitary to have food and bathroom operations happening that closely. Our current 2BR/2BA has more square footage and in unit washer/dryer. Additionally, we were promised a north-facing (Manhattan-facing) view would be available yet only ONE room was barely north facing. First Hardeep said that there were no 165% AMI apartments left then that switched to there are 4 apartments left then that switched to there’s only 1 apartment left. Then he said our lottery number was so high it wouldn’t make sense to go for the 165% AMI. This was all in the span of 10 minutes. Hardeep said that the 125% AMI apartment was bigger than his own apartment in Brooklyn and we should be appreciative of that. So after a 3 month process, sending over 100 documents, we find out that we aren’t even allowed to see what we are eligible for.
The doorman was rude. We explained we had an appointment with Hardeep and give our names. He goes to the back and we hear him tell Hardeep, “Two random people are here to see you.” Then he comes back out and says “Yes, you are correct, you do have an appointment with Hardeep.” We knew we were correct to begin with so that whole interaction was weird. We also noticed three white women walk out and were greeted kindly but two black women walked out and were ignored.
I’m confused why the building is 75% low/middle income yet amenities are not discounted. We are a family of 5 and paying $75 per person for amenities is ridiculous. This will definitely make the housing connect applicants, second class citizens in the Gotham point community.
Typically, when you are approved for a housing connect apartment you are allowed to see ALL apartments you are eligible for, not one that a leasing agent picks for you only. While HPD gives the final approval to move in, the leasing agents at Gotham Point decides which application moves forward and which doesn’t through it’s discriminatory practices in the leasing office. They will most likely respond to this review with the same copy and paste response about HPD over looks the process to ensure no discrimination but please understand that is NOT true. Debby, Henry and Hardeep all decide who gets in and who doesn’t.
I currently live in another housing lottery apartment in LIC. So we’ve been through this process (more than once) and know all that is required. That said, we denied the 125% AMI apartment and asked for the 165% AMI (Hardeep confirmed we are eligible for) and our application was withdrew from the Gotham point housing lottery. They do not want Black people in this building and systemically use the lottery process to weed Black people out. Grateful, just a feeling I’m sharing that lottery applicants may feel in common through their own process). Martin and Yvonne (management) introduced themselves in a way that will deter you from wanting to be social, in what’s supposed to be a community where resident interaction is encouraged. Harassed by management on several occasions. Accused of smoking, i don’t even use incense now because they will convince themselves you are in violation of your lease. ive reported the same smell (that causes the halls to smell like a casino at some points of the day) to the desk downstairs and trust me— there is so little movement that I am uncertain if my concerns are as “heard” as tenants of different demographics because my door is banged on like the police and the yelling was down the hallway. The threat of attorney to create fear in tenants is stressful. Im not sure if we all get the threat or if it’s just.. I digress.. Anyway, nonetheless; I shouldnt be discussing my home in therapy. Harassed in the gym for accounting matters prove they use cameras or other technology to track their residents, safety isn’t the only reason. I personally am reluctant to use the gym for that reason, it’s very nice though! There are just too many crossed boundaries within my first 6 months of tenancy. Doing some research, there are several complaints about the same person. there is at least 1 Sex offender in the building, and suicides all over the neighborhood really darken the vibe spiritually.. Its a beautiful utopia.. but a darkside sure does accompany During our last interaction, Martin did express a kinder side that I wish I was met with during our first interaction. Not much accountability.. but i appreciated being spoken to like a person. Like a tenant. It’s not unbearable, just unfortunate & disappointing. I’m pretty friendly and approachable. I articulate myself well but this was the first time I ever felt like I was treated like…some “obviously” wrong black lady (if that makes sense). There hasn’t been interaction for the past few months but i thought it was important to document and share my candid take. The building staff is friendly. You can tell when something is funny with your account because of the way they’ll talk to you about it though. It’s just idk a socially humiliating kind of vibe. Like CARD DECLINED - awkward desk moment and a “yeaaa.. talk to management” Being firm in my position, id rate it a 9/10 generally speaking and about 6/10 if you’re DWB (dwelling while black) culturally.. nuances and negative PUBLIC interactions make us uncomfortable (iykyk) The school AND neighborhood is wonderful and my daughter being happy makes anything tolerable!! Not only is the service excellent, but it is clean and the building is still very new. The staff is very friendly and the amenities area is cleaned frequently.
The opening hours of the amenities range from 5:00 AM to Midnight.
A doorman is always on hand to receive your luggage.
The area is just a short walk from Hunter's Point, so a stroll is a must. It is a bit far from the station, but it is a short walk while looking at the trees along the river. The free shuttle bus service is available early in the morning and in the evening on weekdays.
The library is nearby, and UPS, USPS, and the police station are also very convenient and safe nearby.
Most importantly, it is a great place to be pet friendly.
One disappointment is that there is only one person stationed n the front desk, so depending on the time of day, you may have to wait in line. However, it is not that big a problem. They are very friendly and willing to help.
They also have an app for residents where you can find information on amenity events, updates on luggage, and contact information in case of equipment problems, so you can get immediate assistance. This is the best service that Gotham Point...
