I brought my antique engagement ring to this jeweler on the recommendation of my friend. It needed to be restored. They told me they could do this and it needed to be cleaned, resized, and have some prongs fixed. First they told me it would cost $300, which I knew was not even close to market. I got so frustrated I started crying and they told me they could do $150. It was a horrible experience and felt so dishonest.

When I got the ring back the stones looked beautiful. That said, they had taken a lot of gold out of the band and made it quite thin when they repaired it. It looked sloppy. I realized shortly after they had not repaired the broken prongs as they said they would. I brought it back again. When I got my ring the SECOND time, the "repaired" prong was crooked and a different color gold than the rest of the ring, but I just wanted it back. A few days later, another prong broke.

I wound up having to take it to another jeweler who told me the prongs had to be built up and the band made stronger. It wound up looking amazing. Haniken made it look sloppy and didn’t even do the work I wanted. It’s fine if they were not capable of restoring my antique ring and that wasn’t within their skill set, but they should have said so. Instead I had to go through that horrible experience, wasted $150 and had to spend more on another jeweler.

Edit: I called them as requested in the owner's response below. They told me to come in. When I got there, they told me I should have brought the ring back (for a third time??) instead of writing this review. Why would I return to a dog who has bit me three times to get bit again? It was clear that they didn't know how to do the work and it would have been foolish to come back again. They ultimately refunded me my money, which I did appreciate. I entrusted Haniken Jewelers - Albert Haniken, 57 Rt 23 West Belt Plaza, Wayne NJ 07470 to make a simple clasp replacement on my Mothers distinctive and valuable jewelry. I have been a customer of Albert Haniken for over 20 years and I have brought family and friends who purchased expensive countless items from him. I told him repeatedly that they are irreplaceable family heirlooms and to handle with extreme care. It was my Mothers wish to gift them to my daughter for her wedding. Albert said he gave them to three people and the work could not be done, I appreciated that. On 7/24/24, I picked them up and I was immediately shocked and nauseated to see that there was a large gemstone COMPLETELY MISSING. They were returned ruined, defaced, loose stones, pry marks on the back and a silver wire snapped off. The disrespect and callous nature of how they were handled in his care, is reprehensible. Albert was asked personally three times by myself and my husband, to please try and locate the missing gemstone and he said it wasn’t there. Since then, Albert has been unresponsive and has ignored all of the appropriate channels of requests that I am taking, this is beyond unacceptable. The rare gemstone that was taken out needs to be located, or to be replaced with something comparable in size and color. If I can even locate a proficient and skilled person, the repairs alone to what was done to them are specific and complex, but without the gemstone - it’s impossible. I can't put into words how much I love Haniken. My fiance' has bought me an engagement ring last minute (because his friend who's family owns a jewelry store flaked on him and he needed a ring for a well thought out proposal) from a chain jewelry store. Both of us loved the ring but the customer service was TERRIBLE. The two of us decided to return that ring so I started doing research on jewelers in NY. Haniken came up and I did my research and contacted them. I worked with Elyana and sent her pictures of my original ring and our budget and within the day she had sent back a bunch of options to look through. She was so friendly and kind and it really makes a difference to us. It was nice to be treated with respect. Once we picked a ring, she sent a video which really helped me fall even more in love with it. She always responded promptly and within a week I got my new engagement ring. It is GORGEOUS and the quality is so much better than the one from the chain story and LESS MONEY! I can't wait to work with them again for our wedding bands. My advice to anyone looking for rings/diamonds...avoid the chains and go...
