I have been a member of the gym since it moved into the community. There is much to appreciate about XSport Fitness - 24 hour access for members, sauna, top-notch aeorbics instructors, etc ... It also has areas of concern.
The devil is in the details. Read the fine print before signing anything. I had a complimentary session with a personal trainer. He was very good. I found him smart and friendly. I signed up for paid sessions afterwards but was given incorrect information. I specifically asked about the cancellation policy and was told that I could not cancel once I signed the papers. I could cancel without penalty in extreme circumstances like an injury which precluded me from participating in the service. I later read I could cancel up to three days after signing the contract at no cost to me. I take responsibility for not fully reading the contract during or immediately after signing. That's not XSports fault. I just hope Xsport takes responsibility for the information that they provide clients when directly asked. I want to give the associate the benefit of the doubt to say he made an honest mistake. Nonetheless, I still feel hustled. I will think twice about entering in any other agreements with Xsport.
I have the premium membership plan which includes aerobics classes. The instructors are passionate, talented and have a strong following. My fellow gym members are good people. They are friendly and really support each other. It's the kind of crowd that pools money together to buy an instructor a gift during the holidays. This is my experience with the aeorbics class crowd. Some reviewers may choose to refer to members as 'ghetto' but I think that is just a common trope used by people when they see a lot of black and brown people in one place. They can take their business elsewhere if they choose.
I really have not come across broken equipment since I have been a member, but I spend most of my time taking classes. Nevertheless, I like the variety of machines on the gym floor. Jacob's Ladder is at this location. Not many gyms have this apparatus. The equipment for the workout studios and X-It classes are in good shape.
The front desk staff has improved tremendously in my opinion. They hardly paid attention to members in the past. Front desk associates now smile and look like they enjoy working. They are not always good at determining who is next in line but they really try. I give credit to people like District Manager Gail (?) for getting them on the ball.
An area of concern for me is the cleanliness in the locker room. This should really be an effort between members and the XSport staff. Some members have no concept of what it means to share a common space. Members leaving remnants of clipped toenails on the locker room floor is highly inappropriate. I also believe the entire staff should pay attention to details when cleaning. I saw the same candy wrapper in the sauna for a month until I removed it myself. It was embedded in the slats of the seating. It would be visible to anyone carefully cleaning the space. I don't like comparing gyms, but I really like Blink Fitness' 'Everyone cleans' philosophy. Staff and members work collectively to keep the gym clean. I would love to see XSport adopt cleanliness as part of their core philosophy. I have seen it successfully executed.
I also wish the premium membership included the spa (i.e. hydromassage, LED facial). These amenities cost extra for all members. They should be included with the premium membership. There are days in the month all members can partake in a hydromassage for a nominal fee ($5).
I like XSport but I am not loyal to it. This is mainly because of the absence of certain amenities for premium memberships and my interaction signing up for personal training sessions. It's a decent place but I am open to exploring other gym options as they...
Read moreUPDATED REVIEW JULY 2024 They have lost THREE stars and a customer since I made the original review* One of the few in NYC with a pool. Brought my mom here for water aerobics and three classes in she gets an eye infection from the water. Swim caps are only optional here so there is always hair floating in the water and wet paper towels by the edge. The reason I downgraded to 1 star is because the gym is always dirty, the few good machines they have are always taken or of order and the amenities I paid for aren’t available because they’re out of order/not available. That’s upsetting because those extras are what I paid EXTRA for (jacuzzi and private steam rooms and water massage/LED facials and Tanning bed). Plus they advertise that they have TANNING included in their packages but they don’t even have a tanning bed at this location. False advertisement!! For the last YEAR the locker rooms and gym floor have been littered with empty water bottles, paper towels and liquid spills and protein bar wrappers. In the ladies room you can often find hair in the drains, tampons on the shower floor, no soap in the dispensers, no toilet paper in the stalls. The handicapped bathroom and shower stall BOTH have broken handrails. My mom, who is disabled, almost killed herself by using the railing for its intended purpose, to lean on for support to lift herself up. It’s been broken but it came off. The shower stalls are moldy, the fixtures rusted and broken. I got stuck by a small sharp metal Object that was on the ladies locker room floor. It drew blood and hurt like heck. I went to the front desk for help and they didn’t. I waited almost 30 minutes for a band-aid and to speak with a manager. After that I couldn’t wait any longer because I would’ve missed my group fitness session. No one took an incident report, no one ever followed up, nothing. And if all this wasn’t enough, they have the nerve to keep sending me text messages to renew my membership when I’ve been telling them (and other members have complained as well) for the last year that the gym is gross. So they can send a text for renewal but they can’t send a text to check up on a member who was injured at their facility?? It all just doesn’t add up. And finally when I took my “free” personal training session….. it wasn’t free because they wasted my time on three separate occasions. Each time I scheduled a session I had to wake up earlier, leave earlier and pretty much change my whole schedule to accommodate THIER TRAINERS as opposed to the other way around. The first two times I came For my personal training session the trainers NEVER SHOWED UP! The third time the trainer came over 30 minutes late. Rushed through the session which DID NOT INCLUDE ANY KIND OF WORKOUT, PLAN OR TRAINING. We did not go up to the gym at all. This was really a personal training SALES session. They just did an old school version of an in body scan and then said I had to come 3 times a week and how much could I afford. The trainer texted me once to follow up but every time she saw me in the gym she would ask when I was going to start training with her. Ummm how about NEVER!!! I was so upset after three different personal trainers wasted my time (I work 2/3 jobs so when I come to this gym which is TOTALLY OUT OF MY WAY, the little time I have to spend there is precious). All of these issues combined me NOT renew my membership. I AM NOW HAPPILY A MEMBER OF EQUINOX.
ONE GOOD THING I was taking Yoga with Michele on Saturdays and Sundays. She is amazing. She never made me feel bad if I can’t physically do a move, she took her time to talk if you needed tips and she listened when i noted a specific body part is hurting and I’d like to focus on it. Michele also does private and NYC Parks programs. Other members I’ve encountered both women and men were super cool &...
Read morePLEASE READ UPDATE BELOW ⤵️: I like this gym a lot good vibes. I usually came around 4pm which was great but also last few days came around 10 am . I was able to utilize the 7 day pass which was great and came EVERY single day lol. The elliptical machines were dusted by the staff when I got there around 4pm. I didnt like the fact that the dumbbells where everywhere and couldnt find the weight I wanted which made me feel overwhelmed so I had to leave that area and stick to the machines. The hydromassage bed smelled bad like sweat and I didn't see any cleaning supplies the first day but that was my fault for not asking because later I did see it was in the hallway before you go in the private massage room. Needless to say I had to get a shower after that. That was probably my only main negative. It seems to get crowded around 5 pm or so like most gyms. This hydro massasager does seem stronger than others I have tried. I like they have more than one and you can close the door for privacy. I was told day 1 that on the guest pass I could go to the classes but in the second day I made sure I got there on time for the class and was told that it was not included which made me go there for 6:30pm to do tai chi when I could have just came earlier and did my regular workout smh. That did leave me a bit upset. It was also the hottest week and I noticed the air conditioner was not working on the main workout floor. There were portables but it was extra hot which kind of made me not sure if I wanted to move forward if this will be an issue the entire summer of 2023. I didn't try the pool but looks cool. Infrared Sauna was nice and relaxing. The locker rooms were a bit messy but not terrible. I also noticed that a locker had a top in there from someone's bottle and it was in there the next day too so wasn't cleaned too well but guess can't clean or check all of them so I get it. All in all other than the issues I mentioned I like the gym and I would recommend this gym to others.
🚨Jan 12, 2025 UPDATE: The gym is currently under New Management which is LA Fitness and to be honest I'm not fully happy with the new change primarily because I have had issues where I'm going to do Yoga and there are no cleaning supplies present this has happened on more than one occasion where I had to run upstairs in order to get cleaning supplies. Today I went throughout the whole gym upstairs and all and there were actually no wipes. I went to the front desk and asked management and they said we are aware of the issue but there is nothing we can do. I was literally annoyed and now I feel like I have to bring my own Clorox wipes or Lysol wipes as a backup just in case because this has happened more than once but usually at least I can get some upstairs but not this time. I never had that issue in the past because we had paper towel and we had the spray. There was also no paper towel today in the bathroom and many of the stalls lacked toilet paper. In the women's locker room today someone has had their clothes and bathroom essentials in the locker without a lock for several weeks. The other issue that I have is that the spa area has been shut down for the last 2-3 months and the only thing that I've been told is that LA fitness does not normally offer those things but I don't think that that is fair to people who have been going to this gym for years. There has not been much communication at all which I do feel is very unprofessional I feel like an email or something should be sent to those that are currently paying their money to be at this gym and we're under the expectations that these amenities would be a part of the package. Not happy because I love the infrared sauna and the massage bed... 🚨6/25 UPDATE No AC & No Pool currently 88 degrees while writing this . I called corporate and emailed have not...
