When approaching this ferry terminal entrance, don't get caught by other people with vests that will try to convince you to purchase tickets for a ferry. This one is totally free! In my opinion you may not get up close to the Statue of Liberty (if that is the intention of the ferry ride for you) but I feel as a first time visitor to NYC and (limited funds), this gave my family the sight to see the statue and be satisfied. We rode the ferry from one end, exited (because it was mandatory) and re-entered the ferry for the ride back. It was a quick trip and we enjoyed it enough. We did not use the facilities on the ferry, so I can not comment on that.
