If you're thinking about doing something adventurous while in Hawaii, this is it!! My husband and I were thinking about snorkeling with turtles, but decided to be brave and try swimming with sharks. It's a little tricky to find the harbor relying on maps, but we got a text message with better directions the day before. The crew was friendly and we were able to go out with a smaller group (6 of us and 3 crew members), which made for a great experience. Neither of us has been snorkeling before, and our crew walked us through the steps and gave us pointers. (If you have a mustache, you may not get a great deal on your mask). The swells were pretty big and I was feeling a bit seasick by the end of the expedition, so consider taking Dramamine beforehand. We boated out a few miles and the crew attracted the sharks up to the surface. My heart stopped to see the sharks swimming right beneath the boat. When it came time to get in the water, I let all the others go first before I was brave enough to take the plunge. It is such a an incredible and unique experience to be in the water with sharks. It was scary, but the crew was so knowledgeable and experienced. We had a safety swimmer who swam back and forth along our group to keep the sharks from getting too close to us. There is also an under water photographer to capture this moment for you! The sharks swam under and around us, and while it was terrifying at first, I never had any reason to actually feel threatened by them (other than just being in the ocean with sharks). I felt like we had plenty of time in the water with the sharks and were able to see them swim around us a good many times. Seriously a once in a lifetime experience and well worth the money. We booked through the military MWR...
Read moreWow! What an experience. With many companies offering similar types of trips, I am EXCEEDINGLY glad that I chose Hawaii Ocean Adventure Tours for our snorkel and shark dive trip. Not only was it a once in a lifetime experience to swim with various types of sharks but I felt so safe and comfortable with the staff that any hesitations or anxieties that I felt immediately disappeared. The captain of our boat, Casey, was knowledgeable and helped guide us to the proper locations as well as answer any questions we had. I only have absolutely fantastic things to say about our safety diver, Lily. She was thorough and helpful in her safety briefing and in answering questions. I was a bit nervous going into it but with her by my side, I felt confident and excited. She ensured each of us had the knowledge and understanding we needed to proceed and was friendly and overall became a great addition to our friend group for the day! Not having her on board would have taken away from the experience for us. Additionally, Anna, our photographer, was an incredible addition. After seeing her portfolio, I felt so lucky to even have the opportunity to be photographed by her! Not only was she willing to give us a few extra photos of me and my friends for my birthday, but she catered the experience to us on such a way that will truly be a core memory for the rest of my life. Having such a talented and thoughtful artist there to commemorate this once in a lifetime experience was worth every single penny. I feel passionately that anyone who is considering a snorkel trip or cageless shark dives should not hesitate in booking with Hawaii Ocean Adventure Tours. What an experience, I can’t wait...
Read moreWe booked 2 trips with Hawaii Ocean Adventure Tours: A snorkeling and a fishing charter. The snorkeling trip was amazing!!!! Saw lots of beautiful fish and even swam with some turtles in 2 different locations. After jumping off about a 10 foot lava rock, the Capitan noticed dolphins in the distance. He knew how to plot a course to get in front of the pod. The pod of dolphins swam within a few feet of the boat jumping and spinning (spinner dolphins). The Capitan them asked if we want to see some sharks. He knew where to go and within a few minutes we had several sharks swimming around the boat. We even saw whales!!! The fishing trip was not so successful. It was 3-4 feet waves. We went in the afternoon at our choice, but still a great adventure because the Capitan was fun and she was obviously trying to get us some fish. Advice regarding fishing, go in the morning. Keep in mind the first few days when you get to Hawaii, you will be up very early because of the time change. We were up before 5am the first 3 days because of traveling from central time. We should have scheduled a morning charter one of those days. We had 2 different captains and both were great and clearly very knowledge of the area. There were 2 “deckhands” that were also fun and helpful.
We would differently book again the next time on the...
