Shaka Guide is the best bud you could ever have! We’ve been to Maui 3 times, Oahu once, and always make sure to do a tour with our Shaka :)
We’ve completed - Classic Road to Hana, Sunset Haleakala & Stargazing, West Maui Coastline, Oahu Legendary North Shore Loop & Honolulu’s Backyard Rainforest tours.
Alllll of them 10/10 would recommend, must do! It’s like having a buddy in your car who tells you cool history you’d never otherwise know while driving past, and also having a local who gives awesome recommendations! Never had any tech issues either, super smooth system, even my parents have used it!
I will say - we had 2 days on Oahu, and picked the Legendary North Shore loop since it was longer, however, it was mostly surfing history, surfing people, boards, and surf spots. I think if we had to do over, we should have done the Grand Circle Island Tour.
Also - ALWAYS check their recommendations on what to bring, we forgot to check before our Haleakala Stargazing, and forgot warm clothes😂 very cold but thankfully we had beach towels to keep us warm, not too bad!
I’m telling you, do it! Our favorites were Road to Hana, West Maui, Haleakala, and Backyard...
Read moreMy wife and I were looking to drive the Road to Hana in Maui, and wanted it to be more than simply a driving adventure, so we decided to give Shaka Guide a try. The cost was only $20 and we thought "What do we have to lose?" It turned out to be a great decision. The app was simple to download, and the audio program worked flawlessly even though we had no cell phone coverage most of the trip. Using GPS to track our location, each audio segment was perfectly timed, and the commentary was chocked full of historical anecdotes and stories, local legends, current social and economic events affecting the area, touring tips, restaurant suggestions, and suggested activities along the way. The narrator's tone was upbeat and fun, and along the way they mixed in a variety of music of all different styles that is tied to the culture of Hawaii. The entire program was fantastic. I'm never afraid to express my opinion, but there literally was not one way this program could have been improved. It was perfect in every way. We'll definitely be checking out their audio programs for...
Read moreI got the Big Island package. I recommend buying it but with a few caveats. Excellent effort at the app, so please support these guys, and it will only improve ( I hope).
Pro: GPS triggerred information, stories, narration and directions in friendly fun voice. Even watchouts in speed trap areas Found a couple of things I wouldn't have otherwise. Offline maps
Cons: Buggy app: 1. inegration with google Maps is buggy. At times, had to stop on a side of the road to figure out where to go as it just won't give directions to the tour starting point. 2. Sometimes, it would stop sending voice through Android Auto, requiring disconnection from the car and to run off the phone. 3. Some of the information isn't up-to-date, it shouldn't be that hard to update. For example: Mauna Kia visitor center has organized star gazing event now only once a month, app says daily. There are multiple viewing sites with placards installed off of the saddle road, none of which...
