Decided to visit every TCG shop in the Jacksonville and Orange Park area while visiting home for the holidays. Now mind you, I am not the type of individual to give someone a hard time. Well, my 4 year old and wife wanted to go card shopping with one card in our sites, Lugia V Alt Art. Now, at the time of this incident (3-4 days before Christmas) this card was listed on every website for $220 or less. I had to call to a gentleman upstairs to give a price for the Lugia V that they had in the show case. There were maybe 8 or so Pokemon TCG cards in the case on these little stands and Lugia V was one of them. Now, this is an ungraded NM Lugia V, retail going price with tons of movement between $195-220. The gentleman came downstairs and looked at the card then went to a computer. He then returned and told me the price of the card was $347.99. I said, excuse me? He said my system suggests that this is what I set the price at. I was shocked, so I had to ask how his system could make a card 158% higher than the going rate of the card? I had 59 copies, 59!! On TCG labeled as NM under $220 with the majority being under $210. The man smirked and told me well that was the price. I did not cause a huge scene, but I did make sure that they were aware that if they were going to sell the card for that price then it needs to be graded. We purchased the Lugia V at another Local Shop about 25 minutes later for $190 after buying numerous other things at the store. This was my first experience in this store, and although I was only there for the holidays I hope this isn’t a common business practice here. Maybe since I mentioned we were visiting from out of town he didn’t think I’d check the price or maybe he didn’t want to actually sell the card. My wife, son and 2 family friends were with us during this incident and although they don’t collect Pokemon Cards even they know a bad deal when you get hit with one. Hope this makes someone else aware to check prices before purchasing any cards here and maybe this was a one off mistake. But the smirk and the oh well attitude when I showed the going rates for the card etc was enough to take my money elsewhere. I have been very hard pressed to find a local game store that goes as above and beyond for its community than Vortex has been doing for its community. It’s a small and cozy shop that can get pretty hectic and busy at times, but they always do their best to make sure their gaming community is cared for. On a side note as to why I honestly think they are the best game store in our local community, I am disabled and so I have a lot of trouble keeping up with my own passion for the Warhammer hobby, especially when it comes to GW’s hectic release cycle. Vortex has helped me be able to continue my passion for Warhammer since the first time I reached out to them for a release I was super excited for, but wound up having major health issues and being in the hospital for those. I was afraid I’d miss out simply because my health got in the way again. But, to my surprise, when they responded about the product I wanted, they didn’t ask for money up front, they didn’t mind how long it may take me to get to the store to pick it up (I did have my father pick it up for me while I was still in the hospital anyway because he wanted to help me get something for everything I had been through health wise to cheer me up), and they were more concerned about me getting better than when I could make it in to pick up the item. They’ve continued to show this extreme kindness to this day and thanks to them, I’ve been able to not only enjoy my passion and keep motivation going for my hobby, but I’ve also been able to enjoy a better recovery for my health issues as well since I can still feel accomplished and productive through putting together and painting the models (self funded at home art therapy basically lol).

Honestly, they deserve way more credit than I can fully give them for this, but they have certainly gained a lifetime patron for their dedication to and support of the gaming community here in town.
