Discount Building Materials — Local services in Oxford

Let me start off by saying that I cannot believe that I am having to leave my first ever negative review, but here we are! My wife and I have visited this store around Christmas for the last few years shopping for decorations. Extraordinarily long story short... we had well over $1,000 in ribbon and a few other small items. We did not realize that it was a few minutes after closing as we did not hear any announcement. If you have been there then you will know... it is easy to get lost in the unique inventory. I had asked an associate up front about a tree that they had displayed because my wife wanted a pair to go beside the door in the foyer. His response was to the effect of... "you want it now!" "We closed 10 minutes ago!" This was followed by several snide remarks under his breath. I started to tell them never mind and you can put it all back but the pure look of joy on my wife's face when she found a few ribbons, that she joyfully bragged about the beautiful bow that it would make, forced me to complete the transaction. I, very softly, explained to the more managerial looking guy that I had undoubtedly made him mad, and he instantly went into defending the guy saying that he was just nervous to leave the front yet there was another associate behind the counter the entire time. We loaded the north of $1,000 purchase into her SUV, and she got into the car with tears in her eyes! Seeing that… my temperature went well past boiling! My sweet wife, who loves everyone, and everything, said that she never wanted to come back! What??? This is her favorite Christmas store!!! See how bad it was! I am even being as nice as possible! I really want to say more, and this is after a few hours to try and make sense of it all. This was truly unprofessional and uncalled for. I am terribly disappointed in such a nice establishment! I will gladly pay double somewhere else to have my wife treated as if they genuinely appreciate her business! Sorry... rant over!

Also, I am adding a couple photos of the tree. The picture shows how it was displayed in the store along with what you actually get once they removed it from the planter. Once removed from the planter it revealed the addition $60 price tag. So... $320 each! Very deceitful! Today was just an all around bad experience.

Now I never leave reviews or try to be annoying but every single time I go in there I’m never greeted, never treated like I’m a paying customer ever. And I don’t wanna insinuate anything, but I don’t understand how I’m not greeted but the person that’s right behind me gets to be greeted and it’s like that every single time I go in there. I know that this is Mississippi, but if you don’t like a certain clientele coming in to your store, then you should put a sign at the door cause if I’m spending hundreds of dollars I should be able to do it without rude employees, and without being looked at weird just because of the way i was born. Even if you don’t like a certain people, could you at least tell your employees to not be incredibly rude...

This is an amazing place with an odd mix of home decor, hardware, home furnishings, landscape supplies, hobby... They keep adding selections, which is broad already. Ya gotta visit it. It's a stop for us when we make the quick trip from Memphis to have lunch at one of the restaurants at the Oxford Court Square.

It's time for 'em to spruce up the image a bit to keep up w/ what's inside: rethink the name "Discount" and the homemade quality of the sign on the building. But never fear it belies what's inside. So let's call...
