This is one of the most original and ethically run shops in downtown Petoskey. The owner/proprietor is committed to creating and enhancing community values and unity and creating a safe place against bigotry and divisiveness. I was in the shop some time ago when three people began filming into the store when children were in the store. When the proprietor requested they cease, the people filming immediately began hurling a string of offensive and obscene epitaphs and would not stop. The shopkeeper, rightfully, responded more aggressively. This only encouraged the adolescent behavior of the 3 who were videoing (and apparently were moving through Petoskey trying to illicit similarly negative responses in similarly offensive ways according to the police). Ignoring the behavior proved to be the be the most effective response. But, apparently, these people returned on this date and have now begun to try to start a campaign to defame the shop and its owner in reviews here. Poetess and Stranger is such a cool little shoppe in downtown Petoskey. The vibe is always super warm and welcoming, and you can tell everything inside has been selected with care. And all items in the shoppe are ethically sourced so you are not only supporting a local Petoskey business, but also small business owners that items are sourced from. The owner Sarah, is so friendly and easy to talk to, and it is obvious she is doing what she loves, and what she was meant to do.
Not only that but Sarah does everything she can for the community including a Saturday evening art meetup, community parties, poetry readings, and a pantry that contains household items and food for anyone that needs it - no questions asked. And on top of that the shoppe is a safe space - for anyone.
Definitely worth a stop if you’re in town. Or even if to are local!

Read moreSarah has put together an amazing collection of products. She obviously cares deeply about her community, with her personal library and emergency essentials by the front door. Sarah herself is not only kind and personable, but genuinely cares for the people in her shop. My friend and I happened to mention our allergies, and when we were checking out with our products she double checked the ingredients list to make sure we were both safe with our purchases. I am very happy with my shopping experiences, as well as the products I have purchased. I am already looking forward to...
