I was so exited to find a little co-op right around the corner from my new apartment and promptly paid for a membership. Unfortunately all my hopes and dreams of having a great little store that supports local products and businesses were quickly eradicated. I am not a cheap person and routinely pay extra for better quality and to support small/local businesses/fair trade practices. This is honestly the worst Co-op I have ever been to --in any city --in my entire life. Disgustingly over priced and little to no reward for paying for a membership. The saddest looking assortment of produce -- most don't look edible and some are practically decomposing on the shelves. A tiny container of rotten berries will run you 6 dollars. And unless you want to carry mold around with you, there is no way to return it. Many expiration dates for things that have long shelf lives are nearly expired. A can of condensed cream of mushroom soup is $5.00. 7 dollars for a half gallon of milk that at whole foods costs 5 dollars. There are so many more examples I could give but I think I've made my point. If you think this is a quality establishment, I feel truly sorry for you.
I will however continue to go there-- when I have no...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI was excited to find a new Produce Co-op near my neighborhood, but I was greatly disappointed after having a go - everything seemed overpriced, sometimes double what I see at other co-ops! The produce selection was very limited and looked old and near to rot, if not already at that point. The meat choices were unsurprisingly limited, nothing special at their shelf stable and tinned food aisles, but pricier than other co-ops. The dairy choices were three to four times more expensive than they should have been for mass-produced dairy items.
If I needed to buy one specific thing and South Philly Food Co-op was my most convenient choice I might return, but...

I particularly like the coop-coffee that gives a $1 donation to PACA. Excited to shop there in the future. My only complaint, and itās most likely a personal oversight, is that I couldnāt find any hummus. The horror. š
Some prepared food (made in-house or, if not possible, supplied by local makers) would be a nice addition as well but overall itās a wonderful addition to the neighborhood and I look forward to doing my grocery...
