It is really disappointing, that Bohning's does not try to be more competitive with pricing. Currently in all rural towns, Walmart is turning into this nightmare no one wants to deal with. There are 40 checkout lines and 2 open, then there is the self checkout, which is really poor customer service, and a ridiculous process, because the scanners malfunction, and you have to take everything you have already scanned, and start over. Personally, I have gotten to the point, I would rather go grocery shopping anywhere but Walmart, and many others feel the same, which is why local hometown Grocery stores like Bohning's are seeing a resurgence. Besides Bohning's, you also have Rouses, which is another hometown feel grocery store, that is a bit pricey, once you get beyond the basic grocery staples like Milk, bread, sugar, eggs, etc. What Rouses has, is some really creative proprietary specialty foods in their seafood market, and bakery, that are store cost leaders, but in ways specialty delicacies like boiled crawfish, shrimp, and premium bakery quality cakes and pastries. A old New Orleans Baker giant was McKenzie's, that featured the Petifore small individual almond wedding cake quality pastries which is popular at Rouses, as well as store featured cookies like pecan praline cookies among others. Taking all stated into consideration, Bohning's, is the grocery store that has been open the longest in Ponchatoula, most of it's customer base are loyal locals, which is why Bohning's pricing competitiveness is really disappointing. As pricy as Rouses is, Bohning's is more expensive in general, which is really disappointing. As a Ponchatoula local, who has lived in Ponchatoula for over 50 years, you want to support your hometown mainstay grocer, but you do not want to get gouged on every grocery item. Bohning's has basically become a convenience store with respect to pricing. Many of their shelf items are smaller in size, and considerably more expensive than Rouses...
Read moreNice people and easy to get in and out. Sorta pricey on things but I rather spend a few more $ and also get some items on sale than going to a huge supermarket that never puts everyday products on sale. For example: Bordens ice cream or even just milk never goes on sale at the well known department store we all know so well what store I’m referring to. So basically their prices aren’t bad if you get some products on sale it averages out. Simple and fast!! AND if you rather support local businesses and not have to be in a crowded store, this place is the perfect store. I especially like their meat department as well. The ground meat just taste better. The steaks etc all just seem better and fresh. Overall their meat is very good quality meat compared to supermarkets. The deli is ok but it’s not a huge store. I don’t usually get there before it closes so I really don’t know about the service in the deli. They do have wonderful bakery treats though. Mainly, the employees are very very nice!! That’s important to me. Not sure if others just like going to huge stores but personally if they aren’t nice or helpful I won’t waste my time or money anywhere that can’t employ nice and considerate people. Or if it’s just that they are overworked idk but not very fond of rude employees and I have NOT ever had one experience at Bohnings that an employee was rude. They have ALL been very kind!! Even to the minutes before closing and have worked all day. They are just sweet nice people that care and talk to you like your a human. They interact with my granddaughter when she’s with me. It seems like you’re walking back in time when you go here because you can’t find that type of friendliness in...
Read moreI want to expose a young man, CHARLIE GATLIN, who works for Bohnings ,who I think should get some spot-light for the respect and kindness he has shown to Bohning's customers. This young man went far and above what most would have done these days. I had taken my mother to buy her groceries at Bohnings. I am disabled and she is 80 yrs old. After the very courteous young lady had checked us out, she called for Charlie to bag our groceries. That was all he was asked to do. He didnt even ask, but rather just told us to lead the way to our car. Once there, he told my mom to go rest in the car and he proceeded to unload and put our groceries in the back of our vehicle. I tried to give him a tip for his helping us, and he refused, saying that he was glad he could help. I thanked him, and as he was taking the buggy back towards the store, I asked him his name. Well, Charlie Gatlin, you have given me a newfound respect, and hope, for our newest generation of Americans, especially our own hometown youth. If you're ever shopping in Bohnings again, say hello to Charlie and thank him for his dedication to his community and to his employer ! I know he will be honored to hear your words. Thanks again...
