Liberty Bay Books — Local services in Poulsbo

As a local author, published by an indie publisher, my husband and I always visit and support smaller, independent bookstores whenever we can, realizing the immeasurable value of these establishments. While we have been to Liberty Bay Books previously, this visit was especially fun, as it was bustling with other enthusiast shoppers/readers. The shop has a good selection of books (and genres), and we absolutely loved seeing the local authors prominently celebrated at the front of the store. I was also delighted when I asked a younger staff for recommendations, and she was engaging, knowledgeable, and excited to talk books. This is why I am happy to pay full price for a book at a smaller bookstore. It's an actual experience. In fact, now that we live closer to this charming bookstore, we will certainly be having these experiences more often.

They have a very nice selection but the counter staff was pretty rude. She did not acknowledge our entrance, did not thank us for our custom when we left, did not offer a bag for our purchase, and the only assistance offered was when we tried out one of the spinning tops in the kids' section, which made a slightly loud and short rap on the table - she came over and asked if we needed any help in a tone that sounded like we were about to destroy the entire store. The prices on all the cards and postcards in the rotating stands are not marked, so there is no way to find out how things are priced until you are at the till. I have always found a sufficient variety of selections at Liberty Bay Books; I usually come out of the store with a new or used book, whether that was my intent going in or not! If they don't have it, they can order it for you... We are lucky in Poulsbo to have this well-run store. Until this month we had another store with used books, but its owner sadly died very young and we will miss her (Soon Hood) and her store. The owner of Liberty Bay, Suzanne Droppert, is book savvy.
