The woman who owns this store is an AWFUL person. I used to shop there almost daily and have seen her firsthand berate employees if they make any mistakes or aren't restocking products constantly. I've heard of employees who were expected to work double shifts with no lunch break if the owner didn't want to come in. This is NOT okay! Additionally, the owners DO NOT hire POC—having lived in the neighborhood for years I've only seen white young students sitting behind the counter. It's 2023—what kind of message is the owner of Hawe's sending here??? I would love to support a small business and she does stock interesting (if grossly overpriced) products, but knowing the backstory I cannot in good faith support an obviously racist owner with severe emotional dysregulation issues. This new shop is a treasure trove of items like mirin that Whole Foods no longer carries, Bar Harbor Seafood broth, English teas, regular and gluten free pasta-even truffle infused hot sauce, etc. Locally sourced meats and so much more! Everything a serious cook could want but finds difficult to get at conventional stores. Put together very thoughtfully - an individually owned store that needs our support to thrive.
