When I walked into Plumb Gold in Racine, WI, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted. All I knew was that I wanted a unique mother’s ring because I had a very unique journey with my children and family. I wanted to acknowledge, honor, and celebrate my story – all through a piece of jewelry.

When I arrived at the store, I talked with Abby, who listened to what I required and why with an open heart and a beautiful mind. I told her that I had two beautiful daughters who I love with all my heart. In between those two, however, I also had a pregnancy that ended in a stillborn daughter at 22 weeks old. Not only did I want to honor my daughter in heaven with her birthstone somehow set apart from those living with me, but I also wanted to convey that there is a happy ending to this story. I don’t talk about her much, but when I do I want people to understand that although it was the hardest path I’ve ever had to walk in my life so far, I am a better person and a better mother because of it. I am because she was. I also explained that I wanted to somehow incorporate a rainbow into the piece. My second daughter is what is referred to as my “rainbow baby.” She truly is my bridge from sorrow to joy, darkness to light, and death to life.

I knew the jewelry at Plumb Gold was beautiful, but I wasn’t sure if anyone could capture what I was trying to do and say – in one little ring. Abby and I had never met until we discussed my ring, and yet, I almost felt as if she looked into my heart and (in 20 minutes, no less!) somehow used her incredible artistic talents to put what I felt on paper. Every curve I threw at her, every additional request was accommodated perfectly. The final design was nothing like I had envisioned when I walked in – it was a million times better than anything I could have ever conceived myself.

When Austin showed me the finished product for the first time, I cried. I cried because it was the celebration of my three children, who have all shaped me into the person I have today. I cried because it also acknowledges me and my husband, making it more than a mother’s ring – making it a family ring. I cried because it so very clearly captures the concept of the rainbow – an amazingly important part of my journey from grief to gratitude.

Not only are they incredibly talented at what they do, but they take the time to truly understand what you are trying to accomplish with each piece and make it into a reality that you never thought possible. I have been fortunate enough to purchase two beautiful rings from Plumb Gold. Austin and the staff were wonderful! The first ring I purchased was a replacement for my wedding ring that was damaged and needed major repair. Since I had the ring repaired in the past, I felt it was time for me to get something unique and sturdy, since I tend to be hard on my rings. I absolutely love the ring I chose, a beautiful blue sapphire with diamonds, and knew I would be back to have a second ring designed and made especially for me. For my second ring, I wanted to use the small stones from my wedding ring, and the even smaller stones from my Mom’s wedding ring, a ring I’ve had for 40 years! I brought in the rings, along with letters that my Dad had written to my Mom after returning from World War II. In his letters, he described the rings as “keepsake rings” with “a really large stone and some smaller stones”. I guess back in 1945, a diamond that was probably no larger than .15 carat was considered large! He even told my Mom how much he paid for them! The rings didn’t have much of a monetary value, but to me the sentimental value was enormous. I always knew that whoever designed my ring had to read the paragraphs from the letters that my Dad had written to my Mom in 1945, and Austin did! Once again I worked with Austin and had him design a one of a kind ring that I wanted to look like a piece of art, and it sure does! I absolutely love it! The ring is contemporary, with both yellow gold (for my ring) and white gold (for my Mom’s ring). All of the diamonds from my ring and my Mom’s ring were used, one set in a bezel and the rest randomly flushed mounted. It is absolutely stunning! It is everything I asked for, and even more than I ever could have imagined. Austin nailed it! I can't even begin to express my satisfaction with this jewelry store! Austin and his team go above and beyond to provide a level of customer satisfaction that I've never experienced. I had heard numerous recommendations for Plumb Gold and decided I wanted to purchase an engagement ring here. Staff was extremely helpful in helping me pick out the perfect ring! We had brought the ring in to be sized and told Austin that we thought the diamond may be moving in its setting. Austin inspected the ring and agreed there needed to be some corrections made. The ring was sent in to be sized and have the diamond setting fixed. We received the ring back and it was as beautiful as ever. Seven weeks later my fiance came home from work one evening and noticed the diamond was missing. She was crushed to say the least! We went to Plum Gold the next morning to explain the situation. Without hesitation, Austin said that the diamond would be replaced at no cost to us. As it turned out there was a design flaw in the ring itself that allowed the diamond to fall out. Austin saw to it that the design was re-engineered to hold the diamond correctly. They provided us with a silicone mold of the ring, for us to approve, and described how the corrections would ensure the diamond would stay in place. We received the ring back, and as a token of appreciation for our "patience" during the process, Plumb Gold provided us with an in-store credit for a future purchase and a gift certificate to a local restaurant. This certainly was not necessary as we were just so thankful that the diamond was replaced at no cost to us!
