Today I called Johnson's to inquire about a jewelry service that their website led me to believe that they would offer. I am interested in having a 1.1 carat loose diamond set in a 6 prong white gold setting/band. When I acquired about this service, the receptionist was ONLY interested in where I purchased the diamond, and where I purchased the setting. It turns out that I purchased both from reputable online dealers (Bluenile for the stone and Shane & Co for the setting). Once the receptionist heard these two facts, she immediately stated that, "They typically don't get involved in these types of situations". I had to laugh! What kind of situation does she think this is? The situation is simply setting a loose diamond in a ring, and according to their website, they offer this service. The receptionist proceeded to say that, "Since these were online purchases that Johnson's could not verify either the quality of my stone or my setting", and that is another reason why, "They can't get involved in situations like these". Ahemmmmm. Hello lady! You are a jewelry store. You should be able to assess the quality of both stones and settings! Are you telling me that your jeweler is so incompetent that he can't assess the quality of a round 1.1 carat loose diamond, and a 6 prong white gold setting? LOL. If he/she is indeed that incompetent, then I think other potential buyers need to be made aware of this fact, and that any potential consumers should use caution when doing business with jeweler who can't assess diamond quality and setting quality/strength. After our engagement, we went back into the store to look at the wedding band. Dan and Susan, another employee at Johnson's, welcomed us and wanted to hear all about the engagement. Both of them were so sweet and genuine. Dan sat down with us and explained all the details of the ring and the diamond, which I greatly appreciated. He also cleaned the ring for me (even though I'd only had it a few days) and gave me a bag containing the cleaner, paperwork for the diamond, and his card. Dan also made an appointment for me to get my ring resized.
The following week I went back to get my ring resized by the jeweler, Brian. Brian came downstairs and personally approved the correct sizing. I dropped my ring off on Thursday around 5pm, and it was ready by Friday morning. I got to the store 5 minutes before closing on a Friday (5:55 pm), and both Susan and Brian were waiting for me to try on and pick up the ring, which was sized perfectly.
As a younger person who does not know that much about jewelry, it can be intimidating to go into a jewelry store. Dan and Susan made me feel so welcome and at home, and they made me even more excited about my beautiful engagement ring.
