NC Fitness Club (Raleigh) – Predatory sign‑up & cancellation tactics
My daughter tried to cancel a brand‑new membership at NC Fitness Club in Raleigh less than 24 hours after signing. Instead of a simple “we’ll cancel it,” she was told to send a letter to a totally separate billing company (ABC Fitness Solutions in Sherwood, AR) while the gym kept her signed contract and insisted they’d “send it in” anyway. They also required her Social Security number just to join. This is exactly the kind of setup consumers complain about.
Here are the red flags we experienced (and that others report): • Hard‑to‑cancel hoops: Being forced to jump through a third‑party billing company to cancel is a classic barrier tactic. ABC Fitness Solutions has pages of BBB complaints from people trying to stop billing or cancel memberships. • Separate entity billing: The gym is one brand, but billing/enforcement runs through ABC Fitness in Arkansas. Even BBB lists ABC as a third‑party billing company for gyms. • Pattern of consumer complaints: Public complaints about ABC often say “the majority of complaints pertain to canceling gym memberships.” That aligns with what we were told. • Local sentiment: Reviews for NC Fitness Club mention cancellation problems, too. • Not BBB‑accredited: NC Fitness Club itself is not BBB‑accredited. That doesn’t prove wrongdoing, but it’s another yellow flag.
What NC law says (why this matters): • NC’s Attorney General warns that health‑club contracts must clearly disclose your right to cancel and how to do it. If they require advance payment, the contract must comply with the Prepaid Entertainment Contracts law. • There’s also a statutory framework on refunds/cancellation fees; gyms can’t just make up obstacles or ignore a valid cancellation process outlined in the contract. • The AG also explains you do sometimes have a legal right to cancel after signing, and sellers must notify you of that right in the contract.
My take: Requiring a SSN to work out, then throwing up walls the very next morning when a member tries to cancel, is predatory. If you’re confident in your service, you don’t need trap‑door billing and maze‑style cancellations. I would not recommend handing over a SSN to any gym that uses these tactics.
If this happens to you: Cancel in writing exactly as the contract says (email + certified mail if possible) and keep proof. Dispute any unauthorized drafts with your bank. File complaints with the NC Attorney General and the BBB and reference ABC Fitness Solutions if they’re...
Read moreBuyer beware of predatory business tactics used by Dwayne Thomas. Be sure to read about the 3-DAY REFUND / CANCELLATION POLICY TOWARD BOTTOM OF YOUR AGREEMENT!! Be sure a date is written. Above all, do not pay any large sums of money ahead of time. Read all the other 1-star reviews (there are many) where other clients experienced similar issues. He also knowingly misled me to seek a refund from the billing company, but they said because I paid in full, I had no balance and thus no account, and it was up to the owner to provide a refund. This is a pattern at this gym. I sent a certified letter and per US post office, he refused the letter.
I’ve been boxing with elite and former pro boxers in NYC for 7 years. And came in specifically for boxing lessons. I paid $1,260 for 3 months and after not having a single boxing session decided to look elsewhere. He specifically wrote "Boxing Only" on the top of my agreement, and beside the personal training type, he wrote the word “boxing.”
I went for 2 sessions and did not box. He had me run 20 mins on a Peleton, do lunges and bear crawls while he sat at his desk and shuffled papers.
I repeatedly asked about boxing, and he always had an excuse ready. In our second session, with 5 mins left, we did some mitt work without wraps. He said there was no time for wraps. I knew better, but was lured by the chance to box.. This was unsafe and I hurt my wrists.
He refused my refund citing a 3-day refund policy which he never discussed with me at the consultation.. He also wrote that our sessions began on 1/3, but they did not start until 1/8 (thus conveniently passing the 3-day refund deadline).
He applies classic used car salesman tactics, rushes you, flusters you, misdirects, is evasive, intrusive - a real fast-talker. Buyer beware. Now I have hip pain, ankle swelling., and he refused to provide my refund; A real...
Read moreI DO NOT RECOMMEND!!! Something shady is going on here and the people who work here know it but hide it! I sent off my letter to cancel my membership the other day! Yes! You have to write a letter and can not cancel by phone! I also disconnected my bank from them and ABC FINANCIAL who is their billing company! I was told on a recorded line that my account is current meaning paid up to date and when i send my certified mail off to cancel that will be the day my membership will be cancelled. I know something else shady will happen so I am spreading the word because something is wrong here! I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau and a few news outlets I am in contact with if something else goes wrong after today! I have a feeling my membership wont be cancelled right away and they will try to contact me to take more money! I was told by Norman (Primus) the trainer that my workout sessions would be “consultations” and my price would be less after i discovered money being pulled out of my account every two weeks when I told them I wanted to do monthly. Something isnt right and you can tell by searching information about the gym, word of mouth in the area, and by searching their billing company ABC FINANCIAL issues on google! Dewayne Thomas was very misleading with this whole situation and the gym is usually empty, leading me to believe people have found out about their ways! My next step is writing reviews on the Better Business Bureau on both ABC FINANCIAL and NC FITNESS CLUB. Believe the negative reviews you see here and the negative reviews on their facebook page! There are women on there complaining in their review section as well. They try to get people to leave positive reviews to drown out what is really going on. While I was there i was constantly asked and sent text messages asking to...
