Edit 2: After sleeping on this, I realized I wouldn't expect Walmart or Target to care about Pet food safety, so I shouldn't expect a small business to either. So I'm raising the score to an average score. I was just really disappointed because I really liked Pet Joy. They used to have an employee named Kim who was so sweet and helpful. So I expected the same level of friendliness from current staff... maybe that's unreasonable.
Edit: Got a voice mail message from the owner stating staff have to follow protocols (in other words, it's not Oxy's fault - she was trained to act that way) and wanting to discuss some kind of resolution. As I said to Oxy and I said in my review - I'm not trying to get a refund. I just wanted someone to make a note of the concern in case other people started calling with the same concern, the store could pull the food IF it becomes clear from multiple calls that something is wrong with it. But that is not their policy. Their policy is to do nothing unless enough animals have gotten sick or died that the brand issues a recall.
There is no kind of "resolution" for that, so Pet Joy doesn't need to contact me again. I just want to make sure the public is aware that is the store policy. I wish I had known.
Original: So very disappointed in this shop. I bought some Taste of the Wild dog food there last weekend. Since then, my dogs have been violently ill twice.
I decided to call the shop and report that it might be this particular dog food. I spoke with "Oxy" (maybe Roxy?). I explained that I don't have a receipt or even the original bag, so I'm not looking for a refund, but I'm reporting that there may be something going on with this particular food. They may want to pull it from the shelves if other people call in to report their dogs got sick too.
Oxy told me they cannot pull food from the store unless the brand themselves recalls it. I was surprised by that response and thought maybe she misunderstood me. So I repeated that if other people also start calling in reporting that their dog got sick, then they should take action. She again repeated that they "cannot remove something from the shelf unless the brand issues a recall. I asked if the brand owns the store? She said no. She asked if I wanted to speak with a manager and I said no. She then started saying I'm the only one who's called. So I just hung up on her because I guess the first person reporting an issue doesn't matter (fyi my purchase is logged in their system by my phone number because I have a customer rewards account).
So there you have it - if your dogs get sick from a product they sell, don't expect this store to care. Especially not the woman answering the phones around 11 am on 2-14-2025.
The store needs to hire people who care about animals. She didn't even express any sympathy or concern and just jumped right to an attack. Even after I explained I wasn't asking...
Read moreI don't live in Rancho anymore, but I definitely wish there were more pet stores like this one where I live now. They are so friendly and courteous here, it is an absolute delight any time I'd went in the store for something. The best part, in my experience is that they do not sell cheaply made cat trees and condos like everywhere else does. They actually go through a local person who makes them out of solid wood. It's the best condo I've ever purchased and my cat has accepted no other since. I tried time and again since moving to find one like it and there just isn't any - they are all made of particle board and are completely unsturdy.
I just called Pet Joy asking where they purchase there's so I could finally buy a 2nd good quality one for my cat, and the lovely woman who answered told me in great detail of how they found a local guy because of the vendors making poor quality trees/condos. Now we are looking into getting one shipped from there. It is worth it. This place is...
Read moreUnfortunately my pup has received a cancer diagnosis and the first round of chemotherapy wasn't successful. His lymph nodes got considerably smaller, but he never really went into remission. Before going to a new chemo protocol, I wanted to give his body a break and also started him on a new diet. Pet Joy was recommended for the specific food I was looking for. I did an online order, when we went in to pick up the food, the staff was super nice and helpful. Very welcoming to my pup, even though he was a...
