I visited Mena's Hair Salon with a request for hair color, shampoo and style. I presented a photo with the exact color I desired and was assured that this could be accomplished. During the treatment I noticed that my hair began to turn a bright blonde and out of concern. I was told that once the dye was rinsed, the hair color would be brown color I desired. To my dismay, the final color was in fact blonde and not the brown hue I expected. I was reassured that a second attempt would result in the correct color but unfortunately, the revision resulted in bright orange roots and blotchy wine ends. The stylist requested to make a third attempt at correcting the color but knowing the potential damage that this could cause, I declined. I requested to speak to the manager regarding this and offered to pay only for a portion of the services, but not the color. This set the salon in an uproar, leading to four angry men shouting at me to pay immediately. In their attempt to pacify me, they offered to have me return another day for color correction, but only if I paid the balance immediately. Since I agreed to pay the additional money only after the correct service was accomplished, the harassment intensified. To diffuse the situation, I offered to pay an additional $10 in good faith, towards the return visit however, this lead to further escalation of the persecution. The intense verbal shouting further intensified after I requested to see the license of the stylist. Since I became incredibly threatened and began to fear for my own personal safety I sat $50 cash on the counter and walked out.
Approximately 5-10 minutes later, while driving down Lincolnway Highway, I was pulled over by two police officers in separate squad cars. They informed me that a complaint had been made by the staff at Mena's Hair Salon regarding refusal to pay. After explaining the course of events, the police insisted that I return while they escort me back to the Salon. After reluctantly agreeing to return to make the payment I was surprised to see yet another squad car awaiting my return at the salon. In total humiliation I paid the balance and went on my way.
Needless to say, I am completely mortified by the treatment I received on Saturday by the staff at Mena's Hair Salon. As a professional and a customer who has supported this business for numerous years, I am appalled at their lack of professionalism and attempt to have me arrested. Not only could their poor lack of judgement result in a criminal record that could have ruined my reputation, this unnecessary act could have destroyed my entire medical career and future. It is clear, that despite their breach of contract to provide a service with reasonable care and skill, their only goals were financial gain and power.
In review of the myriad of complaints about this company on various social media outlets, I have noticed a common theme: unprofessional service, unlicensed workers, unsanitary work conditions, and poor hair outcome. Regardless of the complaints, no visible changes have seemed to be made. In review of this, as well as based on my own personal experience there, I am very concerned that many of the FDA rules and regulations regarding health and safety are not being followed. I am certain that this salon (and likely all eight locations) are in violation of many safety & sanitation guidelines to ensure that their clients are safe. Also, in regards to licensure, there are a myriad of employees who provide hair services without any visible credentials.
This business is located in Matteson, a predominately black community. which I believe, has lead to a significant disparity in the quality of customer service that customers receive at Mena's. It is time that Mena's assume accountability for their attitude, egregious service, and unacceptable conditions and establish a core level of professionalism that the owner and all staff...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBack in March of 2021 I came to this shop to get a silk press and was told over the phone they could do it. I usually went there when I needed my ends clipped and Rabi always did a good job of servicing me so I felt confident to come in and get the service.
Upon arrival I was greeted as usual but was told for my hair that I should get a keratin treatment and that it was $400. I was told it would give me a silk and manageable texture for months into the year and I was convinced to get this service as I thought theyāve never steered me wrong in the past.
It all started well. Wash, deep treatment, dryer, rinse⦠the usual. It was time to blow dry and I was sent to a man that I didnāt recognize. This man was so unnecessarily rough with my hair and when I asked him to stop he reassured me that the process was necessary and not to worry. I had never received this treatment on my hair so I reluctantly allowed it to continue. For some reason I just knew this roughness was causing damage to my virgin hair as I could literally hear my strands snapping under the blowdryer. We all know you work your way up the shaft but it seemed like he was just yanking my hair from the root. I asked him to stop again and he got really frustrated. Rabi came over and told me everything would be fine and since I trusted him, I let the man finish.
They did the process or whatever and yes my hair was nice so I felt a little better paying and leaving the salon. Remind you it was $400. Rabi asked me to come back the following week to follow up on an appointment. I told him I would but I really felt me heart breaking as I walked out the door.
My hair once touched the middle of my back ALL NATURAL and like I said I only went to the shop for a trim every 6 months. Needless to say this was the last time I had ever went to the shop again. I am severely traumatized. I truly believe I have PTSD. It took me 5 years to grow my hair and LIKE THAT it was destroyed. It was stringy and broken all over my head for almost 2 years. NO CURL PATTERN LEFT! Luckily I got pregnant and my hair grew a bunch after my first child so recently I was able to comfortably cut it to right below my ears. I am ashamed of my hair and ashamed of myself for allowing this to happen. My hair should be to my waste instead you can see my whole neck.
And PS Iāve read so many other comments and YES I believe their shampoo temporarily changes the texture of your hair. I really hate to rate them so poorly because Rabi did such a great job with me but that day has literally changed my life forever and Iām afraid to go to the shop at all. Just do the best you can with your own hair. (Iām only giving 2 stars for Rabiās service but itās not enough for what I...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI only went here because Depress turned me away because of the long length of my hair and the color I asked for. I called Menaās prior to coming in for a price quote for a dye and curl.. once I got there and they started on my hair... the price mysteriously doubled. They were very rough with my scalp and it is still sore and throbbing two days later. They left bleach in my hair too long and my hair was breaking off. They were speaking and yelling in a different language while different stylists were coming over to look at my hair. I began crying and asked the stylist why was my hair breaking off he told me because my ends were already dyed and that he would give me a discount and let him handle it. I told him I may be leaving and he told me I would still owe $55! I told him I needed a minute to think and he got an attitude and began mumbling and then speaking loudly in his language and hovering me. He then started explaining he was charging me extra because I had color on the ends of my hair (which made no sense to me) and would also charge me extra if I used their dye instead of my own. I ended up having to call someone to bring me dye. He did the color and it was not done right.. there are 3 tones in my hair and he missed some parts. He did not get my hair straight enough .. he blow dried and used one of those stove irons and curled my hair when I left all of the curls fell and I was left with a frizzy mess. I had to end up fixing it myself and feel like I wasted my money even with the said ādiscountā I will definitely NOT...
