I would not recommend this gym to anyone who is interested in joining a community that is supportive and professional. At first, I was excited for the new facility. In fact, a friend and I joined together on January 16, 2018. Despite numerous setbacks with opening, the first fee that was charged came in May of 2018.
Today, I went to the gym to cancel my membership due to my moving out of the area. While one of the employees, Kim, was kind and helpful in her assistance, another employee, Rob, was less than professional and condescending. In fact, I would even go so far as to say untruthful. When I was at the gym, Rob found it necessary to remind me three times in the conversation that "a contract is a legally binding document."
When I indicated that I was moving out of the area, I was never asked how far. According to the contract, on page 2, "A) Refund you the pro rata cost of any unused services, within 15 days after request therefore, if: (2) Either your The Maxx Fitness Clubzz home club or you relocate more than 15 miles from present location, or the services provided by The Maxx Fitness Clubzz are materially impaired."
As an honest person, upon return home I googled the distance and it is just under 15 miles. However, had I not looked up the contract, I would not have known there to be a clause regarding distance.
Additionally, when being reminded that the cancellation fee would cost $58, which is in the contract, and I will admit that I don't memorize verbatim every contract that I read, I asked if I could pay for the remaining month (as I forgot that despite signing up in January due to the announced opening that month...and then February...and then March...and then April...and finally May), that my year would not come to term until early May, I was told that I could not pre-pay the $19.99 for April. Rather, I could either wait to cancel by coming back in May, or I would have to send a certified letter to the gym. I was provided with the address by Rob saying, "Here, put this in your phone..." (and providing the address). I inquired as to why the cancellation had to be via certified mail and I was, once again, reminded that a contract is a legally binding document.
According to page one of the contract, "Provided that Member is not in default of this agreement and subject to the terms and conditions hereof, the membership will automatically renew for the rate indicated above. Renewal terms may be canceled at any time provided a 30-day written notice is delivered to the club's address. If your monthly membership has a minimum commitment, and you wish to cancel your membership early, a $58 buy out fee is required with your cancelation."
No where in that statement (nor anywhere in the contract) does it indicate the term "certified mail."
I did share with Kim and Rob that commentary I have heard from others who have tried to cancel this gym, indicate that it is very simple to join, but very challenging to leave.
As Rob walked away, with no comment, (mind you, never looking me once in the eye throughout his commentary/interaction), he whispered something to Kim. I do not need to know what he said, nor, really, do I care.
Upon reading other reviews it sounds as if Rob is apparently a manager. While I recognize the difficulty that comes with being a manager, I am wondering if other posts were simply assuming that as a title, because I would find it difficult to believe that someone with his negative and condescending attitude would be hired for a position of power.
While I am frustrated by the fact that I owed a fee when my original date of signing a contract was January and I had no control over the facility's opening date, my concern for others is the way they will be treated by the employees of the establishment. And, if Rob is, in fact, a manager, then I have serious concerns about the welfare of the organization, overall, as managers are designed to lead by example. His treatment of patrons is not only inappropriate, it is demeaning and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIf I were rating this solely on the location I would give 4 stars. The place is kept clean all the equipment is new with a decent selection, but 45 lb plates can be scrace during the busy times. Why I feel the need to give one star is if you ever have to do anything or resolve anything with your account it will probably be awful based off my experience. I have never dealt with more incompentance, been put through as many run arounds, and been lied to so many times by a business before. I never write reviews but I was annoyed enough I felt I have to. The highlights from my story are as follows. I switched from the suacon location after 3 years since this location was on my way to work. I asked suacon how to switch and they canceled my membership and gave me a receipt to bring to Quakertown where they said as long as I had this paper they would waive the iniation fee and sign me up. Drove down to Quakertown and was told by the manager that suacon had done it wrong and I need to go back and get them to fix it. I went back and suacon assured me they had done it right so back down Quakertown I go. This time Im told I have to request for a transfer online which I was never told the first time. So I go home and apply for the transfer and finish it and am told I will be contacted shortly. At this time I am attending Quakertown daily explain my story each time. I was never contacted I asked the manager weekly what was going on, never being given an answer other than its being worked on. I apply for my Transfer in January the end of March the manager finally started my account and told me I wouldn't be charged the start fee. Two weeks later I'm charged half of the start up fee and I llok on my account and see the other half is on my account as an unpaid balance. I call and complain and am told I'll be refunded in 7 to 10 days and my account will be cleared of the charge. The remaining balance was cleared, but two weeks later still no refund. Then for a week and I half I called multiple times a day asking for a manager or owner to talk to, always told I'd be called back, I was never called back. I left notes with the person at the desk with my problem name and number, no responses. My favorite had to be when I was told I would called before 10am. I waited till 1 called asked for the manager got put on hold for 15 minutes, so I hung up and called right back and then was told he's in a meeting hell call me back... I finally got my refund and believe my account is no longer screwed up but it took 4 months for what seems like should be a very routine task. By looking at some of the other reviews it doesn't seem my experience was out of...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreAnother gym trying to make a buck. I joined the Quakertown site on the may the 4th (Star Wars day) weekend in 2018. The gym was 4 months late opening at this point. I took the tour and was told that they would be adding more gym equipment. Up into that summer they were keeping their promise and started to add smaller equipment little by little and were very late getting the membership wifi added. (this was a feature that they bragged about during sign up) this was eventually added in after 3 or 4 months of running without explanation. I'm really not sure when it happened but, they started running this horrible class during the morning and afternoon that mimicked the fad of the more expensive gyms. A mix of cross-fit and plyometrics that a member would have to pay on top of their membership fee. The thing that burns me up is, no one had mentioned during sign up that there was going to be a section of the gym that you were not going to be able to use. I am paying 20 bucks a month (this is the 10 dollars above the base cost) which was supposed to allow you to join in classes. Being a membership of the other Maxx Fitness site for a few years on Saucon Valleys rt 378 site, no one there tried to pull this blatant money grab. What's worse is the class runs at 5am/pm (ish) and if you are training in the aforementioned area you will be asked to leave the area by a female employee who treats you like you have done something wrong. These two time slots happen to be the two time slots that I can workout. I used to use the sled track and use the sprinting tradmills. Now I don't feel like I can ever use the area because "a class will start soon" and I will have to be escorted off like a criminal. Best thing going for the gym is that it is new and relatively clean. The "on the floor staff" have genuinely great attitudes and seem like they know what they are doing. (That is an outside perspective as I have never used the personnel trainer). This review reflects Gym membership rights and not so much the monetary value they are trying to squeeze out of members In short, if there is somewhere else that you can go to the gym and you are a casual gym user go to a Planet Fitness. I don't have another gym because I work in town but feel many people use Quakertown because of the way highway access. Also, everyone at the Quakertown Maxx Fitness has my work schedule. The gym is abysmally crowded from 4:30pm to 7pm...
