PRICE GOUGING! I started shopping here when COVID hit out of sheer convenience. Higher prices are one thing for an independent store and I expect it to a degree. But Jif peanut butter is just the tip of the iceberg with this place. When the pandemic first hit, this 40oz jar was under $6 just like Meijer, now it's increased almost 20% to $7 while Meijer (who isn't the cheapest) has the same exact product listed for $5.59 (non-sale price).
I'll walk in, as a single guy picking up a couple things and consistently spend more than $100. This wouldn't be so bad if the produce was fresh. CHECK EVERY ITEM before tossing it into your cart. I've looked at meats that expire the next day. I've brought home bread products that have been sliced open and turned stale. I've gotten home with burger buns and found a thumb sized hole in the bag and the bun with a hole in it.
The small store size also means less options and what is on the shelves doesn't always make sense. Take Eggo waffles for example. Village has in stock, strawberry Eggos, chocolate chip Eggos, blueberry Eggos, and a few others. Always in stock, never sold out. But you will never find plain old original Eggos. I get some people like the other varieties but to never carry plain? Again, this is just one example of multiple examples.
The only thing this store has going for it are the checkout staff that seem to be pretty friendly, the location right up the road from my house, and the size which doesn't require a mile walk to get through the store.
I'd like to keep my money in SCS and with independent business but I'm probably done shopping here. I'll probably end up at Kroger on 13 Mile or suffer my way through Meijer again. Village Market is a disappointment as I gave them a fair shot through multiple trips and they just never...
