South Main Book Company — Local services in Salisbury

As a self-described bibliophile, to me there is something wonderfully comforting about visiting a bookstore. As everyone undoubtedly knows, small, local bookstores are becoming a vanishing breed. How happy I was to come across this absolute gem of a bookstore in the heart of Salisbury.

As others have noted in other reviews, this is not a store that covers every subject and has thousands of titles available. Instead, it is clear that this is a store that subscribes to the notion that ideas matter. It is so evident from the moment you walk through the door that the owner carefully selects which tomes to present, in a thoughtful manner.

I loved browsing among the selection and, having chosen a few books, sat down in a very comfortable chair to make sure they were what I wanted. The staff was very courteous and it was obvious from the outset that these are people who, like myself, love books.

I am participating in the Greater Charlotte book. Crawl, this place is 40 minutes from my house. So it is a bit of a drive and you have to take I-75, and that is the quickest way to get there. As far as parking wise, there are options to park alongside the buildings. But you will be right next to the main road, if you don't want to park there-There is a larger parking lot around the building. This bookstore is 2 stories and I believe they are upgrading it to become a 3 story. They were doing construction at the time when I was there. The place is huge and there is a wide variety of genres and everything is well labeled. The person attending the bookstore was really nice and super helpful when I asked her about how to get local authors into the bookstore, and she was very kind enough to show me step-by-step on how to do so. This is a very beautiful bookstore. Cozy, full of great books. However, I will never go back. Not ever. I will, instead, drive to Barnes and Noble in WS. I absolutely believe in supporting local, small business but again, I will never go back. I have no idea if this was the owner or a sales associate, but what I do know is she is a champion in rude, non -accomodating behavior. I walked in at 6:00, I , according to her, wrongly assumed the store was open til 7:00. She shouted, with no smile, "I'm closed".I pleaded for just a couple of minutes to shop because I had driven so far......No, nope. No kindness, no anything , I have never , in all of my fifty some years, been treated so rudely ......and believe me I shop a lot, my purchases would certainly help pay the electric bill.
