COMMENTS TO OWNER RESPONSE. Appreciate respone. I wish you would also take time to understand the reviews I have provided are honest, and in regards to the Facebook review (which you blocked me from) numerous people had the same review of the changes. I have nearly 80 reviews and a very large majority of those reviews are 5-stars, with some 4-stars. Lower is rare and only when the customer service or the overall experience was extremely bad. I prefer to highlight the great establishments. Chicho Boys has great service, but now just another San Antonio icon of cultural experience in the name of "modernization" destroyed. I have stopped a few times during 2025, and I continue to be disappointed with the quality, availability, and price of what you now provide. I walked out each time. I tried so many new things like the Israli melon, the orange watermelon, Mexican eqqplant, and so much more. My wife and I would shop there almost weekly, but at least every other week as we did attend church in that area. We bought so many fruit platters, which were reasonably priced for the size, quantity, and freshness. Thanks for your response where you say you are responding in a respectful manner, but then close by saying if I have "genuine issues" to resolve you welcome direct conversation. I disagree that my issues are not genuine, as again, I very rarely give negative reviews.
UPDATE 3. Wife decided to go and give it another try. She was so disappointed and said she was there less than 5 minutes. The entire display case at the front is pre cut fruit containers that are expensive. Very little selection as before the change of business model. Outside part of the market also had very little. She went to HEB after. Still blocked on Facebook.
UPDATE 2. I have been blocked from thier Facebook page. I have been critical of the change Chicho Boys made. It is obvious on Facebook that they have gone away from their core loyal customers to a more trendy customer base. It is a shame. Instead of the reasonable price and large selection of fruits now there is prepackaged sandwiches. Instead of coolers of lots of fruit they have prepackaged cups of sliced fruit. They are no longer for the community. So many reviews were all saying the same thing. I will update other places now.
UPDATE. Chicho Boys Fruit Market for over 3 years now. We average 3-5 visits per month. I really don't like having to right this review as I was really looking forward to the grand re-opening and when I went this past Sunday to say I was disappointed would be an understatement.
Over the years I have been impressed with the amount, quality, and variety of fruits and veggies, as well as other hard to find stuff such as spices, eggs, cheese and much more. I have tried things that I've never seen or heard about before such as Mexican striped eggplant, Israili melon (sweetest ever), orange watermelon, and a lot more.
This visit, just walking up to the outdoor area was an indication of the changes. Very little stuff outside, and walking inside was no different. Like half of what used to be available and much less variety (like apples and citrus). Most of the prices were the same, but lemons and limes at $.35 each...that is 10 for $3.50, where usually it was like 10 for $1.00. The very little cilantro that was there was all wilted and certianly not fresh. Not sure they could have event made fruit trays as there was no variety to make a decent tray. Not sure why pre-packaged sandwiches are now available. Not sure that is what your customers come for.
Customer service is still good, however, the employees who used to be busy and happy, seemed almost bored and not happy. Not sure what drove the chage, but not sure why you would go away from what was an obvious successfull model to this. With a 92% recommended out of over reviews on Facebook and a 4.6 rating out of 1200 ratings on Google it seems like it was working.
LOVE this place. So much variety and reasonable prices. Worth the drive from North SA. Wife and I go nearly...
Read moreI am a small business owner, based a little bit outside of San Antonio and I was recommended by a friend of mine to buy my bulk strawberries from this place because they were beautiful berries and at a good price. So I did - however, when I took them home I found that some berries weren’t up to quality for me to sell. I called the store and notified them of my problem and they offered me 2 solutions, I could either get a refund or a new case of strawberries. So to me, that sounds great. I drove all the way in city to ultimately get a refund, mind you I payed $28 dollars cash and $3 credit. I get to Chico’s boys and realize I forgot my wallet at home! But no big deal I thought I payed mostly cash. When I walked into the store, immediately I was greeted by two employees, they asked me if I had kept the berries cold because “they looked hot” and where I had seen the mold. I proceeded to show them and told them i’d rather just get a refund for the berries. The man who was helping me then said “you need to keep them cold otherwise they’ll go bad, but okay i’ll give you a refund this time”. To which I explained I did sir, but when I went to pick the strawberries for my orders I saw that the ones on the bottom were in fact spoiled. He proceeded to give me my refund, but asked for my credit card because he said I payed credit. I then pointed to my receipt and showed him that I payed cash and only $3 credit, and asked if it was possible to get the $3 in cash as well. He then handed my receipt back to me and said “come back when you have your card for your refund”. I was trying to explain to him that I don’t live just around the corner and I understand that if the $3 credit will be a problem, i’ll take a replacement case instead. This man is starting to shout at me, telling me he cannot give me a refund with out my card, at this time i’m starting to raise my voice a little louder to tell him sir I will instead take another case of strawberries if it’s that much of a problem. He agrees, and the lady who was with him took the strawberries I had to the back, and brought me another case of big beautiful strawberries- just like the ones my friend recommended to me. She puts them on the counter and says “let’s check them out to make sure they’re the ones you want.” I agree and she starts flipping them upside down to show me that they are perfect, i’m like okay awesome thank you! This man remarks to me “Well those are the Higher Quality ones but I guess.” Excuse me? I payed $31 for those strawberries and you didn’t give me the best quality you had to offer? I will not be returning here again, I am honestly taken back at the customer service I received from that man- however thank you to the lady who went and brought out the best...
