I have very mixed feelings about this hotel.
Pros: The most of the front desk workers were really nice. The room was spacious and comfortable to settle into. There was a full size fridge, which is great when you’re staying for 3 months and don’t want to waste money on fast food. You have full control over the AC, which is nice. There is a security guard at night that patrols the parking lot so no car break ins (I was worried about this after seeing reviews for other hotels in the area). The area is also pretty quiet even though it’s next to the highway. Lastly, it’s pet friendly for a reasonable fee.
Cons: To make it short, I have enough to have left my stay early. I got here early October and was supposed to stay until January but will be leaving two weeks into my stay due to all of these issues. For starters, I’m here with my 2 dogs and the property is littered with stray cats. Why? Because someone on the staff feeds them. So every time I take my dogs out to use the bathroom, they’re looking for and trying to chase after these cats. It’s very annoying. Secondly, the wifi SUCKS! I brought my Playstation to be able to play games with my husband but the wifi is so bad that’s not even possible. My entire stay I pretty much just used my phone data because the wifi here just slowed everything down. Thirdly, I got the suite with the kitchenette thinking that I would be able to cook here…Wrong. The stovetop doesn’t even get hot enough. I tried different methods to cook tortillas for over an hour and ended up having to trash them. I called the front desk to have maintenance fix it, but that never happened. Fourth, housekeeping hasn’t been cleaning when they’re supposed to or replacing my towels. I’m supposed to have a full clean every 7 days and had to ask the front desk for my room to be cleaned when that had been surpassed. Also, when that clean did happen, they didn’t replenish my towels or toilet paper so I had to ask the front desk for those too. Lastly, my final straw was when I woke up and turned on the kitchen sink only to see a small roach come out of the sink handle. I called the front desk to have maintenance spray and was told they’d send them over as soon as they came in. 2 hours go by, I check in, still nothing… Long story short, I waited 10 hours and had to talk to them 5 times to get the room sprayed because the first person on shift “never actually informed maintenance”. The whole situation was treated like it was no big deal, but it is to me. After spraying, I still continued to see them. I didn’t want to believe the recent reviews about pests, but I definitely do now. They aren’t just in the rooms too, there’s massive roaches around the perimeter of the hotel.
This hotel is close to Fort Sam Houston, but I just can’t in good conscience recommend it, especially for my fellow dog owners, who aren’t...

With zero issues, (over the phone, with the assistance of an IHG customer service operator) I used a combination off rewards points and my Chime debit card to reserve/pay for one room for two nights at the Candlewood Siutes downtown location. My boyfriend and I arrived shortly after the room was booked. Check in was a quick procedure. We were in the room less than 15 after we arrived at the hotel. I microwaved the complementary bag of popcorn while my boyfriend retrieved our luggage from the car. Then, as he unpacked and I began to prepare dinner in the small yet efficient kitchenette, we were both startled by a loud ring. It was the front desk calling. We were asked/told to go back down stairs to the lobby. We were informed, by the same person that (less than an hour before) had checked us in, that our reservation had been canceled. How could and why would the GM cancel a room that was already; booked, paid for, checked into and occupied be canceled. I am not allowed to cancel a reserved hotel room after I have checked into it and I never would off belived that the hotel could get away with such nonsense, yet they did. The clerk told us that the hotel's GM had canceled our stay stating that the hotel does not except Chime debit cards as a means of securing the $25 deposit required to cover incidentals. Bewildered, we packed our things and tried to understand how the room that we had already gotten comfortable in was no longer ours for the next two nights. Adding insault to the redickulesnes of the situation, on our way out the door, (to where, we did not know) the clerk called the room again. This time, to inform us that security would be up to remove us from the property in five minutes. We were gone and heading to another hotel before their threat was realized. I am a member of the IHG rewards program and have been since 2017. My loyalty to the IHG family of hotels has been deservingly consistent throughout the years. Unfortunately, the reckless management exhibited to me and the complete disregard of not only the comfort but also the wellbeing of myself and my service dog did not leave my family feeling "completely at home". Unfortunately, my last two stays/attempted stays have left me angry and annoyed, frustrated and insulted. Thank you for reading my story. I hope that your next hotel stay will be at one of many great IHG properties. While in The River City and in the pursuit of proper customer service, I hope that you avoid The Candlewood Suites located downtown in San...
Read moreFirst time staying here at this hotel and it didn't leave a very good impression. At check-in I had asked for a room on the upper floor and because they were "almost sold out" of rooms my request could not be accommodated. The room I got was on the first floor with a view of the cars parked right in front of the window. It looks better in picture but the room actually looks like it was last remodeled in the late 1990s/early 2000s (read: old). There was an arm chair and the throw cloth covering it was very used up like it belonged to a homeless person. The side of the arm chair and even on the sides of the bathtub there are damaging scratches. The walls are so thin you could hear the people talking in the room next door, and even worst was their crying baby. They have a lending locker in the lobby to borrow games and kitchenware if you have that need. Our room had a small kitchenette with all the essentials provided (e.g. fridge, microwave, stove top, serve ware, pots, plates, etc). They even provide paper towel, dish detergent, and facial tissue paper. The room and the bathroom was spacious. Full size shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel bottles were affixed to the bathroom wall for your perusal. Bed linens and window curtains were wrinkly. The window curtain looked old and dirty. They have a security guard at night which is the first time I see one at a hotel; I guess there must be a safety issue here. Be aware that they might slip your checkout room receipt through the bottom door crack at around 4:00 AM; it sounded like someone was unlocking our room door and freaked me out. I would've preferred to get it at actual checkout time instead. Unless they remodel the rooms, I would rather stay...
