TLDR - not the focused "medical" massage as advertised, 1 star for the personality of the masseur and 1 star for the cleanliness of the facility. Otherwise - I believe it's just the usual rent out space to staff who do their routine and expect to see you in two weeks - NOT injury, acute\chronic issue focused... ya know what, 1 star, cleanliness should be the standard and I can't sit long enough to write just this paragraph.
Well I'm up at 6AM with the same pain if not worse. I can't say I'm surprised as, while I enjoyed the person, the massage itself seemed to be the routine lower body deep tissue. I went at length to explain what I needed and reiterated the highlights - I have knotted glutes and piriformis causing acute sciatica. This occurs chronically (every few years) when a disc that slipped over a decade ago gets inflamed. After calming down, chiropractor can make an adjustment for my back, but sometimes the spasms reach my butt muscles and cause knots there that need focused attention to relax back into place and relieve the pressure.
This was conveyed in my massage request and at the beginning of the session. Unfortunately, no stim or heat was used, and the massage was over before I knew it though 90 minutes. (albeit from entertaining and interesting conversation, which I enjoyed... but I paid for relief, you know what I mean).
I would say that the direct pressure on the pressure points of that side has set back its placement due to the muscles soreness and tightness after the massage, not to mention the very painful direct pressure on the nerve itself at one point in the massage - which I vocalized - but was passed as normal. Ironically, I had mentioned that the original old injury was made worse by doctors forcing me in a wheel chair when in spasm, which pulled muscles from my lower back to my hamstrings (though I was numb) which caused the original "bad pattern" of knots that shift the nerve to a taught path at the top of my butt, lower back, all the way down (like fingers on a guitar string), you don't release the guitar string by strumming it, ya know?
Anyhow - I had high hopes I guess that medical massage meant listening to and directly addressing the actual issues\causes\symptoms presented but unfortunately I think it's the usual rented space for-rotating lists of masseuse and masseurs- to do Their thing.
Great guy though and I'd love to have spent 1/3 as much on the regular pressure point massage I could have gotten anywhere, on him. But as I have had to stand twice typing this and now again, I feel it was a waste - except my quads, my quads are sore and looser, kinda feel like they got the attention my back right side needed.
P.S. Maybe not rented space, my super cool guy, is on the front page - just a case of love the person - didn't receive the requested\advertised...
Read moreInitially I found San Diego Medical Massage (Akenaton) on a search for post-operative scar massage. When I went to his website I saw that he also offered massage for TMJ (or TMD) and I had been having problems with my jaw clicking and popping for about 5 months at that time. I had not gotten a night guard yet, and I was to the point of using muscle relaxers every night before bed to help take the edge off the pain so I could sleep. I scheduled an hour session with him to go over the scar and the TMJ and scheduling was simple and fast.
I arrived on the day of my first appointment and parked.* *It's street/lot parking, so prepare for that additional cost/time to park and walk. I went to the door and called the number on my confirmation email and got the code to enter the building. Before we got started we talked about my issues and he explained what he was going to do. He mentioned that TMJ cases can typically take 3-6 session to fix and could require maintenance afterward every 4-6 weeks. I understood and we got started; the TMJ Protocol he used took almost the full hour. There were times it was a little painful but he was gentle and careful not to cause additional pain. At the end I immediately could feel that I could open my mouth a little wider than when I went in and was hopeful it helped. We worked on the scar at the end of that session, but it was too painful so we decided to leave it be.
On my second appointment ( a week later) we focused on the TMJ Protocol only and it was much less painful. I'd also been doing much better since the first appointment. By my second appointment, I was totally off the muscle relaxers! I was still careful about not eating super chewy foods though, but I had come a long way. By the time I went to my third appointment, I was pretty much back to normal. We did the massage one last time and it felt great and I've been doing awesome since I left! No more pain, no more clicking, no more jaw soreness!
Akenaton was professional, easy to talk to, and offered a discount for cash/repeat customers. But even if he wasn't all that and didn't do that - he helped me and that's what mattered most! The fact that he was also nice and rewarded loyalty was a bonus! Initially when I researched TMJ (TMD) relief, I came across a doctor's office that wanted to charge me $350 for the INITIAL visit and consultation. I spent less than that for 3 sessions with Akenaton and I'm all better! I have no regrets about the money I spent or the time I gave to see him. Who can put a price on feeling your best without pain? If you're on the fence, I'd recommend you give him a call and schedule an appointment, you won't be...
Read moreI was looking for a massage therapist for my then 10 year old boy that has complained of lower and mid back acks and pain since he was 5 years old. I Yelped sports therapy and Akenaton's reviews were exactly what I was looking for. Our first appointment was spent with a verbal and physical consultation. Once he accessed my son, he informed us to please set an appointment with a chiropractor because he could feel that my son was dealing with something a little more than just tight muscles. After a hand full of sessions with Akhenaton my son was able to sit for a longer period of time without having to get up and stretch to relieve pain , however, I could still see he had discomfort. I took Akenatons advice and had my son seen by a chiropractor. Turns out my son has scoliosis. A 10% C curve in his lower spine putting pressure on his lumbar. Once Akhenaton's theory was confirmed, the sessions put in place for my son were a game changer. After 3 1/2 years my son is able to sit longer, run, and jump with ease. My son is 14 now and will do his at home stretches Akhenaton has shown him to keep his discomfort minimal. We were sad to see Akhenaton go, but are so thankful our paths have crossed. Akhenaton is very knowledgeable, and always keeping up with his education. We are very happy to see Akhenaton share his passion and knowledge...
