My favorite country potatoes and waffles are the ones at the Waffle Spot! We've stayed at King's In a few times now and had breakfast every morning (and lunch one time) at the Waffle Spot during our stay. It's not a continental breakfast included with the hotel stay, but as a result you get way better quality food.
Our favorite things on the menu by far are: the waffles (we've had regular, blueberry, and banana nut), which are more flavorful and dense than I'm used to waffles being (not quite as dense as a cake donut, but these are to normal waffles as cake donuts are to normal donuts), and the country potatoes, which are cooked and seasoned to perfection (veggies cooked crispy in places but still with some fresh veggie crunch, and just the right amount of seasoning to make every bite flavorful).
Tip: Arrive early in the day to avoid a wait (or else assume you'll need to wait for a table or get your food to-go to take back to your room). We were used to being seated right away at the beginning of our trip when we were still waking up early enough to arrive when it opened at 7am, and then surprised to see a wait toward the end of our trip when we'd adjusted to California time and were waking up later.
I'd give this review five stars for the waffles and potatoes alone, but I did remove one star because quality of some dishes can be hit or miss (every now and then the potatoes/veggies are overcooked, and the omelettes come out amazing half of the time and at other times seem more like they mixed the veggies with the eggs to make a frittata to save time instead of folding in the veggies to make an omelette. I haven't kept track, but I'd guess the times when the quality wasn't as great might have coincided with when they were really busy, so that might be one more reason to go early in the day! Even with that caveat, I'd go back in a heartbeat; I already miss the waffles and country potatoes now that our...
Read moreThe waffles were why we came here! The service and atmosphere is why we would come back for sure!
The atmosphere is so nostalgiac. Reminding us of old ihop mixed with Solvang (if you've been there you'll know what I mean) vibes. The decor was old school diner where the booths side by side felt as if you were eating with another family. Cozy yet fun! The colorful drawings on the wall of kids and old kids interpretations of the waffle king were humorous and a treat to scan over.
The food was really good. 3 of us got waffles and they were perfect. We got the chicken and waffles where one of us got tenders and the other 2 got fried chicken. The tenders were good and the fried chicken had a slight honey taste to the batter....I could be mistaken. We upgraded one plate to banana walnut waffles and the other plate was regular waffles. Both were delicious. The batter of the banana walnut waffle had a banana flavoring to it which was subtle but delicious. The regular waffle was fluffy but firm and soaked up the syrup quite nicely.
The other person ordered a vegi casserole which was ok. To be fair we are at the waffle spot, so obviously the specialty is waffles. I would definitely order something with waffles here each time! We had 3 plates between 4 of us and we left pretty darn full.
The service is what was outstanding. We were checked on by several other staff members throughout the course of our brunch that wasn't our server. We never had to hunt someone down to ask for anything....except for when we wanted the check. Which is OK for me because I didn't feel like I was being rushed out of there.
Anytime we are in the area for breakfast or brunch, we will definitely be...
Read moreI absolutely loved my time at the waffle spot. While my tween daughter was less enamored with the corny theme park style mid century decor and ambience as I was, I thought it was hilarious and charming.
The restaurant is located in the King’s hotel, which is also sort of American/ Midcentury themed, which is a tad outdated but Novel and as said kinda charming . The wait is long on a Sunday , there are DROVES of people waiting for breakfast on a Sunday. But get in the list, and if you have a small party or at willing to sit at the bar ( we did) it goes fast!
Once inside, you’ll notice the grandmas’s diner ambience, except all the waitstaff is Latinx, and some heavily tattooed. It feels suddenly fun and funky So-Cal then in a most delightful way .Our server was awesome , super friendly and funny, and happily gave me crayons, as the walls are covered in waffle art coloring sheets by both adults and kids.
Hubs got some standard waffle he wasn’t so impressed by, ( but he lived in Belgium and is a bit snobby when it comes to waffles ) but my daughter’s churro waffle was Yu—MMY!! . Also I orders of their Mexicano Specialties menus , and my breakfast was DELICIOUS. ( will add name of dish later)
Also Their Branding of the waffle king is hilarious, and they sell their diner mugs with him on it, which would go great with your hipster mug collection if you have one, and definitely take pics with the life size waffle king sculpture out front. I loved it there. If you’re not to fancy for a little down home cooking and ambience and you like that diner ambience , I think it’s the best place for breakfast in Hotel...
