I started going to Junction Hot Yoga in October 2021 to try to resolve creeping middle-age aches and pains: debilitating sciatica caused by piriformis syndrome (a muscle irritating the sciatic nerve, resulting in crippling back, buttock, and leg pain) as well as thoracic outlet syndrome (a painful shoulder nerve irritated by tight muscles in my chest or neck, or poor posture). I also suffered from tendonosis (tennis elbow) and had some stress fractures over the years, so all in all, I wasnāt feeling great when I started. Every day it seemed I woke up to some nagging pain. I had already been to physical therapy for these issues with limited or impermanent results over the prior year or two.
I am thrilled to say that 9 months into my yoga journey of 2-3 classes per week, 95% or better of those annoying or even debilitating pains have resolved themselves. And I also feel younger, like 5 or 10 years has been taken off my age just by walking to class and putting in my best effort a few times per week. Iām not that athletic or strong, and I still struggle in quite a few poses, but Iām getting a little bit better every month. Also, my trainer at the gym has commented how my flexibility in my shoulders is much better than his other 40-something computer worker clients, and I attribute a lot of that to doing yoga here. Most important to me, though, is living a pain-free life againāthatās what I came for, and Iāve got that pain-free mojo back again!
One of the owners, Audrey, is one of the most encouraging, patient, and humble yoga instructors Iāve met. She makes efforts throughout the class and in different ways to remind students āthe best you can do is perfect.ā And offers variations of poses for different ability levels. You never feel like you need to be an Instagram yoga guru to participate in a class here and receive noticeable benefits over time with continued practice. Audrey and the team have created a grounded and welcoming space for all skill levels.
It took me about 30 days of going 2-4 times a week, and then I started to feel the benefits clearly, with greater duration and frequency of improvements as the months passed. I especially enjoy the Yin Yoga for deep, sustained stretches that get into tight hips and connective tissues that were probably playing a role in my aches and pains.
This is a great studio to go to, especially if you are a new student who might feel intimidated by starting or restarting your practice. The studio is also clean...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI absolutely love going to this yoga studio!
The teachers are amazing - they have a gentle approach and really focus on the breath, which helps me stay present in the moment. I appreciate how they balance talking and quiet time during class, and the fact that they don't play music (you can even hear the rain sometimes!) really helps me connect with those around me. They also create a welcoming environment where everyone, regardless of their level, feels like they belong. Plus, they're flexible about drinking water and allow some freedom in poses as long as it doesn't disturb the class.
The studio itself is incredible! I've been practicing hot yoga for over a decade and have been to many (and I mean many) studios, but this one is by far my favorite. The yoga room is one big hallway with high ceilings, warm lighting, and skylights. This āhallwayā leads the back of the studio where there are bathrooms, showers, and storage space. I love the floors - they're more cushioned than usual but not too soft, so you don't sink in. Audrey, the owner, put a lot of thought and love into the studio, and it shows in every detail.
The heat in the classes is just right - not too intense, but hot enough to make you sweat. Depending on where you stand in the room, the temperature can vary, but I find that the back is hotter than the front and sides are cooler than the middle. The variety of classes is fantastic - they offer Restorative, Nidra, Bikram, Vinyasa, and even meditation on some Sundays! As someone who loves Restorative yoga, I appreciate that they have that option. My only suggestion would be to offer a more affordable single class option.
If you're considering trying this studio out, I highly recommend it! The whole space and community are incredibly welcoming, and I've enjoyed getting to know the thoughtful and caring teachers, including Lorenzo who introduced me to the studio. Give it a shot - you...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis incredible studio is a joyful place for me! I've been coming here for about 3 months. I have chronic illness/pain with symptoms that can present differently from day to day. Yoga is the exercise I can almost always do. After a few years of off-and-on home practice, I wanted the accountability and instruction of a studio, and am very happy with JHY. Attending this studio has done wonders for my pain, dizziness, balance, and muscle tightness, and has overall improved my daily function. Additionally, JHY is a great source of stress relief after work (home health/hospice) that helps me transition from some of the heavier moments of my workday. I always look forward to being here.
The studio is thoughtfully laid out. The practice room is private and set away from the street, so that passerby can't watch you from the sidewalk. Skylights allow natural light, and ceiling lights are diffused through paper lanterns. As someone who struggles with bright overhead lights, this is lovely! There are wall supports for those who desire handholds for balance. Equipment/props are well stocked and the space is very clean. There is a locker room area with showers, changing rooms, and lockers. I love that the practice room is a cellphone-free space. Also love that there is no music or incense.
Every instructor is knowledgeable, welcoming, and skilled. I enjoy taking the 26/2 class from a variety of instructors, as they each give cues that push me in different ways--special shout outs to Audrey, Lorenzo, and Mike! Instruction is a kind balance between challenge and empathy; they will push you, but always emphasize the importance of listening to your body. All ages, genders, ability levels, and body types are welcome here.
The monthly membership is reasonably priced, and staggered evening classes are accommodating for most work schedules.
