[Update Oct 13 2018] Thank you for your response to my review. Yes, you kept us aware of the many causes for the delays, but from our perspective as the customer we were hearing just one issue after another. As the weeks of delay dragged on, we became more and more frustrated and each ensuing explanation simply rung hollower than the previous.
We signed the sales agreement with you on the first of May, so it was 4 weeks before we even found out the fabric we had requested was on back-order. Had we found out sooner, we would have been happy to select another fabric, possibly reducing the overall delay. As it was, there really weren't many satisfactory options for us other than to wait.
As for shipping, according to your timeline and when we received the couch, it took nearly 6 weeks to get it from CA to our home. That may not have been under your direct control, but if you consider it from our point of view, we were even more powerless than you. Again, we had no option but to simply wait for updates from you and become even more anxious.
Your comment about your sales agreement and third-party delays is exactly why I would not sign such an agreement again, and why I still recommend that anyone who wants to place an order with you (or with any furniture dealer, for that matter) like we did make sure that such a clause is removed or includes some sort of stipulation that costs you more than just feeling responsible. What if the delay had stretched out another week, 2 weeks, 8 weeks, or more, all due to some "third-party" issue?
At some point, we should have been compensated for the delays or should have been able to get our deposit back. At what point would you have returned our deposit to us, or would you have just kept us waiting? The deposit we put on the couch was quite a lot of money for us, and we were honestly becoming quite concerned by mid-August about what to do. We couldn't afford to go somewhere else while doing battle with you over the deposit. As it was, we had no recourse other than to wait.
All that said, I want to let you and any readers know that we are quite pleased with the quality of the couch and have no complaints whatsoever on that front. The only problem we have had with it is trying to figure out how to keep our 4 cats and 1 dog off it, since they seem to find it every bit as comfortable as we do.
[Update Sept 7 2018] I'm upping the rating from 2 stars to 3. We finally received our couch after 16 weeks of waiting. The delivery guys were really polite and had the couch set up pretty quickly. We're really happy with the quality of the couch so far. I would like to give a higher rating but still feel that we were totally at Modern Design's mercy for a number of weeks. I would suggest that if you purchase something from them, you make sure the sales agreement doesn't include the clause about manufacturer delays or any other "outs." Also, make sure there is something in the agreement about getting your money back if they can't deliver within a specific time frame.
[Original Post] We are in the process of buying a couch from this company. We signed for the couch on the first of May and were told 8-10 weeks for delivery. The price was reasonable and we put half down on it. We are now at 14 weeks and have gotten nothing but the run-around from these people.
