I decided to shoot over the Souix City's Cone Park (also stopped out to Bacon Creek Park).
Cone Park has a lot to offer. Hiking, disc golf, mountian biking, sled hill, bike park &; playground equipment for children.
This review is very Mtn Bike centric as this is the reason I was there. These are in no particular order...
restrooms - ladies will be particularly happy, but guys too. No pit-pottties here. Air conditioned flush toilets inside. Add to that a n indoor concession stand with food & cool beverages = pretty solid win. (It is worthy to note, the restrooms are locked when staff not present which can be large chunks of the clock. Plan ahead.)
trail lay out - the trail system sits on and around a solid hill which is topped by one of the cities water-towers. (For anyone who did the 2007 Extreme Heart Challenge, it was the initial hill run before the busses... yeah. That one) the trails switchback along & around this hill. There is also additional mileage on the other side of a 4 lane road along a substantial bluff line. There are 2 pedestrian specific underpass tunnels to access this section. One tunnel at the bottom as well as another perhaps 1/2 to 2/3 of the way up. Both tunnels connect trail system to trail system so you can efficiently change up your route choices. There is a paved bike route which circles the primary hill for those perhaps on-site, but unwilling to hit the dirt trails. This pavement circles the primary hill, not the bluff. It is a nice bit, I didn't measure it, but would guess it to be about 1.5 miles with only a minor climb along the primary drive.
For those who enjoy riding dirt, but are less excited about pedaling up hill, there is a "lift" up about 1/2 to 2/3 of the primary hill. I didn't take this lift but saw it from a bit away. It looks to be a "magic carpet" which also doubles as a lift for kids on the sled hill during the winter.
The trails are reported to be built by a pro group & it looks like the city recieved thier money's worth. The trails are solid.
I recommend a slow lap up & down the trails to get a feel of what conditions you will face. However over the past couple years, the trails have "settled" and they are a good bit more rideable due natural trail flow adjustments and minor berms. Essentially, midwest forest floor with occasional meadow openings. Sounds easy enough, however there are sections of trail that are not bermed for rapid decent. You need to be prepared. The hill can be quite steep, so if you go off into the bush, you'll likely be better to continue to the bottom rather than up (after you untangle from the trees/bushes & do a health check). There is a "adventure route" (I'll call it that as I didn't ride it) which appeared to have cobble rocks, jumps, and some other features). Additionally, there is a bikeparkon bothe sides of the hill which is a bit more BMX style with berms, jumps & pump tracks.
I rode for an hour, covered 6 miles and there was still uncovered terrain.
Overall, this is a real gem of an area and I am a bit jealous of the local riders. I will be returning and plan to allocate several hours here to really find the flow of the trails & have some extra fun.
Photos are - bike map, BMX track, section of paved trail, meadow sections of single-track.

Read moreI recently had the chance to visit Cone Park, a tube sliding paradise, and I must say, my excitement for tomorrow's trip is through the roof! The last time I went, I encountered a bit of an unfortunate accident that put a damper on my day. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how the management handled the situation. They took my feedback seriously and made significant improvements to address the issues that were brought to their attention.
Not only did they enhance the safety measures, but they also improved the overall guest experience. I was really impressed with their commitment to customer satisfaction. To top it all off, they generously offered me complimentary tickets as compensation for my previous experience, which was a lovely gesture.
I’m really looking forward to heading back tomorrow! I can’t wait to see the changes they've implemented and, of course, to have a blast sliding down on those tubes. It feels great to know that they value their customers and are dedicated to creating a fun and safe environment. Here’s to a fantastic day...
Read moreI had never been to cone park before tonight and was shocked by the lack of safety. They had staff at the top and bottom of the hill, but no one was directing the kids at the top to wait until the people at the bottom had cleared out. The staff at the bottom were helping kids stand still in order to miss being hit. I slammed into the wall at a high speed then 2 teens on a double tube slammed into me. The hill was shut down after that for 20 min because it was so slick. I took my son over to the bunny slope thinking it would be safer there. It was worse! There was no staff at all! Kids were going and not paying attention to people at the bottom of the hill. Some of the kids would get off their tube and leave, leaving their tube in the way. There needs to be rules read to the kids before hand. Supervision and direction need to be implemented. Also, I was not told when I made reservations that if one person from the group does not show they still charge you. As a mother, ICU nurse, and first time customer I left feeling concerned and...
