I won a free tattoo at a tattoo show from one of the tattoo artists here (@rubyjaytats). Everything was great until it wasn’t.

When the winners were announced on her social media, I won a small custom piece tattoo in her style. I was so excited, I messaged her immediately! Everything was great, I sent her some inspo on what I liked before she got me scheduled. She drew a rough draft of a sketch, we tweaked it and found a middle ground in her style but something that i liked as well. BEAUTIFUL SKETCH. We were able to find a day to fit me in the first time. She specifically asked me “Would next Friday be okay?” which was SUPPOSED TO BE the Friday of May 30th. I agreed with Friday, May 30th 2025. I was so excited.

As the day goes by, I message her about a small detail change in the sketch she showed me. I sent her a rough draft shape of what I was thinking and sent it to her, still keeping the original idea intact. She sends me the address of the tattoo shop and the finished sketch later that day. I tell her I love the sketch and that I don’t want anything to be changed, she then proceeds to say “Great! What is your availability like?” Hello? did we not just agree to Friday, May 30th??

Clearly, this scenario is sounding like May 30th doesn’t work for her. It happens, but instead of this tattoo artist being HONEST and saying ‘sorry can’t do that day’ she does not. I proceed to say “I’m still available Friday may 30th @ 6:00 pm.” as inconvenient as that is already, I understand life happens and I follow up my message with “If we need to move the appointment, that’s okay!” and I proceed to send her my schedule and what times I’m available (again). We eventually agree to Sunday, June 8th at 11:00 AM.

The Sunday of June 8th roughly 1:00 AM…yes, A.M. She sends me a reminder about my upcoming appointment, along with the address of the place with a brief description of where the shop is located.

10:37 AM June 8th… appointment day!! I’m so excited, I wake up to a message that she has to cancel my appointment AGAIN!!! Due to “equipment issues” at this point this is unprofessional and frustrating. Why offer a free tattoo if you are going to continue to cancel/reschedule. I try to be flexible and I express to her “I’m available for later today.” She proceeds to say “Unfortunately the artist I share my space with is at a convention this weekend so she has the tattoo bed out of the shop. We can reschedule for next weekend if that’s okay? They were supposed to leave some equipment for me, but I guess they forgot I’m so so sorry!” Next weekend being father’s day weekend, I ask her “what day for next weekend? I’m available Thursdays after 3 as well…” she then proceeds to say “It looks like the next opening is Friday June 20th at 6:00” You’re telling me your next availability is fathers day weekend but you’re offering me the weekend after?? Make it make sense. She then states, “Or any time on June 28th” Keep in mind she had posted the winners on May 19th, 2025. You’ve already rescheduled me twice at this point, and now want me to wait A MONTH???? I was thinking very hard about her offer but with how disappointed and frustrated I was (and still am) I kindly said, “I’ll pass, thanks for the opportunity. Have a good one.” She didn’t respond, but THEN I see she posts the sketches that we came up together as “This piece is available!” The tattoos that I want on my body are all planned out and have a specific meaning behind them, so for you to go out of your way to post that, is crazy. I understand it’s your work, you have every right to, but at the same time it wouldn’t hurt to NOT offer that piece to another client. I‘ve encountered tattoo artists with similar experiences that would go as far as to let their client know that the piece is theirs and they can take it to another artist.

How do you even keep clientele with this level of unprofessionalism? @rubyjaytats

I cannot praise Cassie enough!! She does amazing work and is always making sure the tattoo is what you want, where you want! She makes you feel so at ease and comfortable throughout the whole process. She’s excellent with communication and checking in. Cassie makes you feel like you’re hanging out with your bff while getting tattooed! Highly recommend and will continue to come back for more work...

Obsessed with her skill is a huge injustice to how I feel about Melissa's art. I have plenty of art on my body. But Melissa's pieces get the most attention and are some of my favorite.
