Of the three airports in the DMV, Dulles (IAD) is my least favorite. I am willing to pay slightly more for a ticket to not fly out of here.
The airport is huge and there are no walking escalators (that I have encountered). It is nothing to have to walk a mile or more trying to get to your gate.
Parking is expensive. The closest parking is not garaged. It is an open lot and it is $27 per day. Conversely, BWI's closest parking is garaged and it's $22 per day. Economy parking at Dulles is $12 per day where BWI is $8.
Carts are not available after you pass through security. Unlike other airports there is only one security gate, which creates long wait lines. Be sure to arrive an hour earlier than you would at any other airport for this very reason.
Once you get through security, you hop on an underground shuttle that takes you to your terminal where your plane awaits. The large misuse of space terminal you arrived at is just for ticketing and security. The planes are half a mile away.
The experience returning is worst, as you come through Customs following an international trip. Before you do, you have to board this futuristic shuttle and not the underground one you got on after arriving, no. This thing attaches itself to the terminal's framework.
I personally think the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents at Dulles (IAD) are incentivized for longer wait times. They must get a bonus check for every person who has to wait an hour more. I have never gotten through Customs at Dulles in less than 45 minutes regardless of the day or time.
Once you get through Customs, you navigate through a field of luggage usually left in the middle of the floor to retrieve your luggage off the carousel - that's if it is even working. Dulles may be the only airport in the country where the baggage handlers work faster than Custom agents.
What brings me to pen this review is a recent experience. A companion and I were returning from an international trip. They were provided wheelchair assistance by a kind, older Muslim gentleman with a long orangish and grey ombre colored beard. It was him and a woman with a hijab pushing another passenger. When he asked the shuttle operator, an older African American man, if where they stood was okay, the operator (see pics) barks, "You and your people are never where you are supposed to be, because you don't read," as he points to the wheelchair signs on the wall. My jaw dropped. I couldn't believe it. If I'm being honest, I am more upset with myself than the shuttle operator for not saying something in their defense then. What was said, but moreso, how it was said was cruel, unprofessional and totally unnecessary.
I would rather drive 4 hours to JFK in NYC to catch an international flight (they are usually cheaper anyways) before I come...

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is a well-designed and efficient hub that serves as a gateway to Washington, D.C., and beyond. Whether you’re traveling domestically or internationally, this airport offers a smooth and convenient experience that’s hard to beat.
One of the most striking aspects of Dulles is its architectural design. The iconic main terminal is a masterpiece of mid-20th-century modernism. Its soaring roof and open layout give the airport a sense of space and elegance that’s both welcoming and functional. The terminal is easy to navigate, with clear signage and plenty of natural light to create a pleasant atmosphere.
Dulles has invested heavily in modernization, and it shows. The AeroTrain system, which connects passengers to gates across Concourses A, B, C, and D, is fast, reliable, and easy to use. The train system is a major upgrade from the old mobile lounges, though the lounges are still used occasionally, offering a bit of nostalgia for long-time travelers.
The amenities at Dulles are excellent. You’ll find a wide variety of dining options, from quick bites to sit-down restaurants offering cuisines from around the world. Shopping opportunities are plentiful, with duty-free stores, specialty shops, and local D.C.-themed merchandise. The airport also provides ample charging stations, comfortable seating areas, and quiet spaces for travelers seeking a moment of calm.
For international travelers, Dulles shines as a global hub. Customs and immigration processes are efficient, and the staff are generally helpful and professional. The Global Entry kiosks make re-entry seamless for those enrolled in the program.
Transportation to and from the airport is straightforward. The Silver Line Metro extension now connects Dulles directly to downtown D.C., offering a cost-effective and convenient option for travelers. Additionally, there are plenty of taxis, ride-shares, and parking options available.
Overall, Washington Dulles International Airport offers a blend of modern facilities, historical charm, and operational efficiency. Whether you’re arriving, departing, or connecting, IAD provides a high-quality travel experience that reflects the importance of its location near the...
