Music has always been formative for me. As the granddaughter of a 1940’s jazz musician, music was always integral within our family. There were always stories of Grandpa’s talent- how the room came to a standstill during his solos. There were discussions about all the great musicians of the past and current. There was always some genre of music in the background at parties, holidays, college move in days, weddings, random dinners (sometimes Grandpa just whistling a tune), the births of my children. Music elicits memories and all the emotions that go with them. I was introduced to the clarinet in elementary school (modeling after my grandfather) and continued my musical journey with the guitar and piano. With grandpa’s influence, we instilled a love of music in my older children, by means of the piano, drums and guitar. Throughout our musical journeys, the Music Shop has been a constant. The Music Shop has been present for everything- instruments, sheet music, lessons, recitals, Rock band camp; even a recent purchase of a shaky egg, for the latest toddler musician in our family, eagerly awaiting her turn to take lessons. The Music Shop not only was present to meet all our needs, but helped cultivate our respect, love and passion for music. I will never forget the impact Scott and his staff have had on our family. Perhaps it was best summarized by Scott himself, during one of their beautifully organized Music Shop recitals, where Scott pulled out his original rolodex, and produced an index card with my grandfather’s name and phone number on it--- one of his first customers. For me, in that moment, it all became full circle as I watched my eldest son perform a magnificent piano piece, witnessed by his beloved music teacher, and my grandfather (too elderly to travel) listened on speaker phone to his great grandson play. The Music Shop isn’t just a shop; it’s a conduit for creativity and musical expression where you become a member of their family. Whether it be a friendly salutation, or a Christmas card exchange, the Music Shop isn’t just another business, it is a musical home, where you are treated as part of their family. Scott and the Music Shop have been a part of our family for the last four decades, and hopefully for many more to come. My sincerest congratulations...
Read moreI can remember, as a young teenager, going to The Music Shop with my uncle to purchase vocal selection books and sheet music for voice lessons and solo performances. We knew that, if anyone local had the music we were looking for, The Music Shop would. I can even remember going to the old Hamden Plaza location when I was in college. Fast forward a few decades and now I am an adult piano student at The Music Shop. When I first signed up for lessons, I wasn't sure how I would feel as an adult starting music lessons surrounded by, what I expected would be, school-aged kids who would likely pick things up much faster than I would. However, when the staff took the time to learn my likes and dislikes, they expertly matched me with the perfect teacher for me (Scott Gilliam). Scott G. has been great about working with me and my challenges as an adult trying to learn new things. When I saw that I wasn't picking up on the guitar the way I wanted to and chose to switch to piano, Scott was incredibly flexible and still enthusiastic about getting me comfortable with the instrument. He not only teaches me the techniques, but we also take time to chat about music in general or certain artists and their approaches to music. If any adults always wanted to learn an instrument and thought they were too old to start learning, don't hesitate to visit The Music Shop. You'll find a staff that enjoys what they do and will work with anyone, no matter their age or...
