We moved to Port RIchey recently and having a Filipina wife, the first thing I had to do was find a local Asian supermarket to get fish, seasonings, soy sauce etc...After a quick Google search, I found HL Supermarket. Now we visit almost every week. It really depends on who does the shopping. Since I do most of the cooking, I will go in and spend about $100 on the items I know I need and will use for that week. But, if my wife goes shopping, it is an easy $200 trip. Vegetables... fish... shrimp... snacks / chips for her and the kids... so, I try not to let her shop much..lol. In a 7 day week... I will try to cook 3 Filipino dishes for dinner and 4 American style dinners... but for breakfast...she is still a rice eater, so breakfast for the rest of the family is pancakes, eggs / sausage or cereal.. but for her I have to make sure she has rice with Spam, Tinipa or a meat dish with some soy sauce flavoring...lol. Anyway, the store has a variety of Asian culture foods which is nice, because usually we have a meat dish during the week with some Korean Kimchi !! or a little Japanese wasabi with a California rolls. If you have not been there.. you should stop in. The fish dept. staff do not speak much English, but they always get my order correct. Thanks again and see you...
Read moreI've frequented various Asian Markets (NOT "Oriental" markets, people...that's a rug 😜 ) since I was a kid living in Orange County, CA where nearly 50% of the population was composed of Asians (Filipino, mostly). As a result, visiting Asian stores always creates strong nostalgic memories of a happy childhood. My experiences are mostly biased towards being positive because of this, however, like anything else, I've been to some great Asian markets and some not so great.
HL Asia is definitely up there with some of my favorite Asian stores as it's a decent size with great selections of groceries, produce and fresh (even live) meats/seafood. Prices are average to moderately high however I wouldn't accuse them of price gauging. They also feature a boba tea ordering service. I love the staff as well! They've always been super friendly and smiley even though I know that their English is limited. I highly...
Read moreThis is more mini supermarket because it has everything. Of course, brands Asian but what a selection. Everything DimSum in frozen dept incl many fish and seafood items like soft shell crab, frogs legs and sushi octopus. Great fresh meat dept with poultry, fowl, pork & beef. I can't believe the whitest tripe I've seen since Arthur Ave is right here. Lots of fresh fish and hard to find fresh conch, snails & frozen jellyfish. Fresh water tanks w live Lobster & Dungeness Crab. We bought 2 1/12 lb's yesterday & they were so fresh the meat fell out whole, sooo sweat no butter needed. I hit the fresh produce twice a week. Prices are lowest for high quality foods. Lobster @ $9.99lb. The clams on the 1/2 shell ocean fresh tasty. They even have items usually found only sold on internet like 'black chicken ' & roosters. First timers, allow at least 30 minutes to slow walk the isles, so many choices...
