I attend this San Joaquin Delta College, and it's okay, but I think there's a LOT of room for improvement.
The introductory courses aren't what they seem to be. For example, one would expect an introductory course to first teach you what it's about before throwing you into assignments that expect you to already know a great deal about the subject.
Some of the teachers don't use (or understand?) proper grammar, which makes it hard to understand what they're trying to tell/teach you, especially in online classes.
Many of the teachers are very unforgiving. You'd think that they would want to help you succeed, otherwise, why be a teacher or instructor? Not all professors are like that, for example, Vivian Harper. She is one of THE BEST at helping her students understand the material, she also understand that life happens sometimes, and if she sees it's for good reason, and if you communicate with her in a timely manner and you claim accountability for yourself, she will give you a little extra time on some assignments.
San Joaquin Delta College needs a lot more options as far as classes. And, perhaps even break some of the classes down to be more achievable for many students. (There are a few DSPS services, but there should be a little more, because people are individuals with individual struggles, so more time on only tests just isn't enough. And tutoring might terrify someone who suffers from PTSD or Anxiety.) Just because some students can pass classes the way they are doesn't mean that it's good enough the way it is. For example, Math, I've never taken it myself but from what I've heard, a LOT of students have had to retake it. So, since most Math classes are 5 units, why not break the classes into two, so that they can review the material, then start from the bottom slowly working their way through. On another note, there is not enough choices of career type field subjects. Animal Science and Husbandry is all about farm animals, AND, many of the classes are out of town. (Not everyone has a car!) What about people that simply want to be a veterinarian, or just work or volunteer at an animal shelter, or even just get knowledge about animals because they love or rescue them? What people do later with their education is up to them. Not everyone can afford to attend a university, and community college is the only help they can get. There is only ONE keyboarding instructor! And not enough online classes for it either.
Delta College and it's entire staff should remember that everyone has had different walks in life, different education, and some people haven't been to high school at all so they haven't has any preparation for college due to different road blocks in their life, yet have managed to get their GED to try to do better so they can have a better life for themselves, their families and their children if they have any.
Many professors should take thorough courses in compassion and public service and remember that students, children and adults alike, are at their mercy and trust them to teach them and help them succeed, and instructors should also remember why they got into teaching in the first place.
This review isn't meant to be all negative, their are some great instructors and great classes. But the pickin's are kind of slim. Best wishes to everyone and many blessings to you throughout your...
Read moreDelta College has a less than efficient administration in more than one area. They don’t follow protocol with their school policies if they even know what they are. The school policy about student appeals and hearings in front of Board Members etc. is an example of the most extreme case of conflict of interest I have ever come across. It was always in front of another fellow staff member and never an unbiased outside party. At the end of the day, these people potluck together. Every time questions surface about their conduct in correlation to following policy they tell me they have to check on “that”. My husband was a student last year and either didn’t get responded to or passed over to a diff. faculty member who wasn’t knowledgeable at all about the assistance he needed. He was a victim of identity theft and the grades resulting from it kept him ineligible for financial aid for about a year despite the fact he never received a dollar in financial aid during that period. Seems to me there should be some policies in place for cases like that since a couple years ago all those fraudulent accounts in FA were discovered by two professors. This place needs a serious overhaul in financial aid admin. I knew it was bad when more than one faculty informed me FA admin was a joke. The previous director resigned and then they lowered the bar on the position so someone not qualified could hold the position of FA Director. When I myself attended back in the 90’s the date the FA office posted was the date we got paid! You could bank on it. Today FA date disbursements are explained as subject to change and are only just an estimate as to a pay date. That sounds like it could use some consistency and routine processes so current students can have some certainty as to a paydate and budget their bills accordingly. This educational institution broke protocol on so many levels, I wound up majoring in Legal Studies myself so I could press charges on institutions like this whose main concerns are power trips rather than the welfare...
Read moreI always enjoy Delta. You can never feel like an outcast. It is a melting pot where most people are helpful and supportive. There are a few bad apples of course. The younger one's straight from highschool with kid mentalities. If you have disabilities there are places to aid you and lots of people willing to help. The culinary cuisine is always tempting, but unfortunately since COVID the cafeteria has been closed and it had incredible breakfast burritos and more. Now they have gas station food and the thriving Java Juice with Starbucks coffee. Classes a great, Professor's are very understanding and supportive and the clubs are incredible. Danner Hall, (The food court/rec room is awesome. Couch, chairs and a TV to hook up gaming consoles to play as well as having tournaments. They have a great Police force, excluding one who sped through a crosswalk I was about to cross. But even the groundskeepers are super nice. I easily recommend taking a class or two, or three. Lastly, as a student you have the opportunity to go once a week to the student pantry where they let you get limited food items to help during the week. Also, once a month they have a farmers market that gives out a variety of goods in the Shima 2 parking lot. Check the student pantry for more details. Delta also has 3 Theaters. And one in particular is the Alfred Muller Theater where I filmed a play for him just before he passed away. Great man. There is so much more I can say, but I recommend checking it out for yourself. All (respectful people) are welcome. In N Out is right across the street too. So... Why wait. Go...
