The Servant Stage Company's revival of "The Sound of Music" is an outstanding piece of musical theater, a show that will warm the heart and please the ear of those who first loved this classic when it first hit the stage and screen in the 1960s. The singing is strong, the costuming and sets are gorgeous, the choreography is smart and precise. Because the company recruits and superbly trains its volunteer actors and musicians, it can mount productions on a scale that other live theaters in this region cannot match. The show's central message -- the importance of courageously standing up against evil, no matter the consequences -- remains as valuable now as it did nearly 60 years ago. Lancaster County is fortunate to have the Servant Stage among its many fine theater companies. Its pay-what-you-want policy brings quality theater to many who otherwise might not have the...
Read morewhat a pleasant surprise! Friends invited me along to see Little Women - a show I well know. having just moved from NYC, I was braced for a pleasant if mediocre afternoon with my friends...an outing.
WELL! - The talent was fabulous - one fella bit off on occasion and a bit of ...casting from the available pool..... but the lead WOW! Serious talent. The show was a bit long - especially with the number of families. The set simple but totally worked. Costumes appropriate.
The place works on donations. Loads of snacks/treats/beverages out front available for donation (cash or google pay) and you could take your items into the theater (yikes! mustard on those pretzels). On the way out - the cast held baskets (ala redbuckets in nyc) for your Pay what you wish donation for the show with a bonus of giving interaction opportunities. The bathrooms were open - oh how smart - the men's room was marked for women to keep the lines down.
Although I feared the exit with so many cars - the traffic moved swiftly and politely.
It was very nice to see so many children dressed up for an...
Read moreI sat in the front row and cried through most of the show. My tears have to do with my experience of The Sound of Music--that I saw the movie with my parents when I was a child. When the guards were running at the end, the audience area was also aptly utilized. I know every song in it too, so that added to my enjoyment. This time around, I took special note as to the times that Maria spoke her mind when her opinion differed from that of the Captain's opinions. Later, in their marriage, she always deferred to his judgment. I have it all here in my heart now and so am taking it with me...
