One star review, I know. It's sad that theaters have become so horrible in our country that people expect so little. Sure there's worse theaters out there. Here's my big three complaints: 1 - Concession stand was out of everything. We expect theaters to have crappy food, but if we are going to pay through the nose for their food, it should at least be available. Hard to say why they had no hot dogs, hot dog bites, pizzas, or anything else of substance on their menu. Why can't theaters sublet space in their lobby for a business that can actually provide food? At the very least, if you're going to have things on your menu, it should be available, with rare exception. 2 - Cleanliness. The floors were sticky in front of our seats. The fold up armrest was sticky underneath. I know it sucks cleaning up after patrons, and I wish people weren't so nasty. But, that's the exact reason why I need you to clean the place before I sit down. Next time I'm bringing a sacrificial blanket for the seat and my own Swiffer. 3 - My biggest peeve, the sound! The volume was way down. I go to the theater to have the theater experience. I want to feel the boom of the bass. I want the menacing screeches of crashes to make me wince. I don't want to feel like if I bite a piece of popcorn that I'll disrupt the movie for those around me during peak moments of action. The sound was so low that I could hardly hear the dialog in calm scenes if I just shifted in my seat for a second. I asked the front counter if it was possible to turn the volume up on the movie. I was told that the volume is turned down because elderly customers usually complain that it is too loud. If old people compalin that a rollercoaster is too fast, will Six Flags slow them down? Why go to the theater when my own sound system in my living room sounds and feels twice as powerful with just four speakers than the 15 or so they are afraid to turn up? I think they might have turned it up just a touch after I asked, but just barely. For that, thank you. But there should be a standard, and that standard should require ear plugs if you can't take it. I shouldn't have to ask to have the movie turned up. Maybe offer the elderly ear plugs if they complain it's too loud...
My experience tonight just exemplifies why I would rather stay home to watch movies, and further demonstrates why theaters are losing so much ground in the industry. You ride completely on the draw of huge name movies, and offer a pathetic experience to what I can produce at home. There is ZERO draw for me to come in for any movie other than huge releases, and even then I will seriously consider waiting to rent on Blu-ray or stream. If you have read this far and think these are minor complaints and 1 star is too low, I think you're expectations are way too low. We should expect WAY more for how much we spend on movies these days. The theater is in a nice part of town and it has nice reclining seats, with wide butts and armrests that fold up. Not enough to tip the scale in the...
Read moreGetting the Regal Unlimited was either the best or the worst thing I've done. I find myself here at least once a week for the past year, sometimes doing two-three screenings in a single day. I looooove me some movies. I was worried that this particular theatre was not going to make it through 2021, but they did a decent reconstruct of the place and honestly it's my favorite regal in the Hampton Roads area. I personally enjoy the railings that they put up because it feels like you have more space. The reclining seats aren't cloud level, but they're comfortable enough to enjoy even a 3 hour movie in. And the theatre is rarely packed- I can't speak much on new new blockbuster releases because I'll usually wait a week or so to see them, but my usual experience is that there are maybe a max of 5 people including myself. Off peak times are the BEST. The staff is chill. They're always helpful and the very few times I've had issues, they were resolved quickly and without any friction. The theatre is nothing fancy, but they keep it pretty clean. Parking lot is pretty dim at night. Have seen broken glass a handful of times.
My major, number one, ultimate gripe though is THIS. The reason why I cannot possibly give this Regal (or maybe any Regal?) a solid 5 star rating. THE POPCORN IS TRASH. When I tell you, I LIVE for popcorn at the movies. They go together like peanut butter and jelly. One seems incomplete without the other. I am THAT person that orders a bucket for me, myself, and I. And finish it during the credits- which, are typically like 30 minutes long, so? The popcorn here is almost never fresh. I say almost never, because in the 50+ visits I've had, I've gotten fresh popcorn twice, and even a broken clock is accurate twice a day. But let me tell you, the freshness doesn't matter much because it is STILL not good. It is way too salty, lacks flavor, and it is dryyyyyy. Don't come for me and tell me that I need to add butter. NO. Good, flavorful, not dry popcorn is 100% possible without adding flavor oil. Ick. Regal. Please consider changing your supplier/popcorn machines/whatever it is that has you insulting your customers' wallets charging $10+ for a bucket of over salted packing peanuts. I know it's possible. Alamo Drafthouse and Landmark theatres have incredible popcorn. But I bought my last ever popcorn from this Regal because I have a few shreds of self worth.
I'm still gonna go to this theatre. It's close and I enjoy it. But skip the concessions (at least the 'popcorn')....
Read moreMy family has been coming here for years and have not had any issues up until the last 3 movies we came to see over the last month. There has only been 2 registers open with one person at each resulting in 30-40 min wait for a large popcorn and 2 drinks. Resulting in missing the 1st 10 mins of 2 movies. The floors in the lobby are filthy, theaters used to be very clean and the last 2 movies they have been subpar from where they once were including over flowing trash cans. Our last visit tonight there was no one checking tickets, therefore anyone could walk into any movie they wanted. This is not only costing the theater money but is a safety issue where just anyone can walk-in uncontested without tickets. Again waited in line for 30 mins as only 2 registers were open resulting in long lines. I watched 30 plus people walk in after 9pm again with no one checking tickets. We got out of our movie right at 11 and the concessions were closed. I purchased 2 large drinks with the understanding we would get refills, but concessions were closed therefore that was not possible. The last movie started at 10:30 PM and concession was closed 30 mins after. This is not the first time this has happened to us and witnessed more disgruntled customers who purchased large drinks and popcorn with the understanding they would recieve a refill.
The reclining seats are the only plus left here and unfortunately with the price of a family of 4 to attend a movie and get drinks and a popcorn the service and safety have...
