I am a book lover... not just for the reading, I can do that digitally, but the feel and the smell, the atmosphere of a used book store feeds my soul. A few weekend's ago I went to Barnes and Nobles and just didn't get the same loving feeling. I was so excited to find this store as it's the closest to me and yet 30 miles away. I didn't mind the drive one bit. I was excited to meander the aisles and feel the books and smell their age and just wonder of their history, not to mention support a local business working to feed their families. Unfortunately I was met with judgemental disappointment and left sad, without getting across the threshold of the front door. Barnes and Nobles with its huge national footprint didn't require me to wear a mask, or even ask if I had one to wear. Some employees didn't even have one covering their smiles and were happy to take my money. Sadly, I was not allowed the same freedom in this local, beautiful from the front door, book store. I understand I can sit online and order off the inventory listed and maybe the feel and atmosphere proffered on their website is just words to fill space and pocketbooks; and maybe "Land of the free, Home of the brave" is just a catch phrase nowadays. Either way, I sadly wish the best and will search for another local book store that will open its doors to as much human individuality as it's beautiful...
Read moreIt's a great bookstore, but it's not the bookstore I remember from years ago. It used to be slightly disorganized and the prices were what you might expect from a used bookstore.
Now, however, it's more like a large chain bookstore. They have more new books than used. Some books are $16, $14, $10... A standard mass market paperback will probably sell for cover price, $6 to $8. And an old vintage book from the seventies, $2.
They do accept used books for store credit toward 50% of your purchase. So if you have $10 of store credit and buy $5 worth of books (or book), $2.50 is deducted via store credit and you pay $2.50. It's a good way to get 50% off and make the prices a lot more reasonable.
They are super organized now, and offer a couple areas for the kiddos to play. The children's books are upstairs. They have a great selection of multiple genres, even the classics and pulp fiction. But it's definitely not a garage sale kind of bookstore anymore. It's more upscale, like the surrounding antique stores and...
Read moreOne of my favorite bookstores ever. It doesn’t necessarily go on and on forever, and you probably won’t get lost, but it does feel just the right size. The magic of a good local bookstore is so very much present in the space. The staff is always friendly and eager to help. Example: I went in. I realized I had completely forgotten the paper I wrote the name of my bookclub’s book down, and I did not want to let them know that I forgot to read the book until the week before. So I asked the staff the impossible: “Can you help me find a book? I know that the word “dragon” is in the title and it came out sometime within the last six months”. You might think that is easy, but do you know how many books about/with/named dragons come out every month?!? But guess what! Not only were they able to actually find the book for me (A Language of Dragons by S.F. Williamson), but there was a copy in stock as well! 10/10...
