(Dont let the pictures fool you)
My wife and I came here many years ago and loved it, and I think back then, the menu was different? I feel like I recall them having some really good meatloaf but didn't see it in the menu.
I had family in from out of town, so I was excited to bring them here for breakfast. We had about a 45-minute wait, which was fine for us. We walked around Sumner while we waited since it was nice out.
When we were called in, we were directed to our table (4 total). 2 of the seats had big puddles of water on them. I believe our waiters name was Tom, I do know for sure it was a bald guy. When pointed it out to our waiter, he seemed extremely irritated that we even pointed it out, but he replaced the 2 chairs and still hadn't wiped down the 2 chairs that were soaked. Anyway, I let it go and sat down with my family.
Tom took a while to get to us after that, but he seemed like he was trying to do way too much at once, and he walked around with an annoyed attitude, which my family began to notice. I overheard 2 of the tables by us, and I heard similar comments from the customers like, "What's that guy's problem?".
2 of my family members ordered a special that they had advertised in the front, pumpkin pie French toast, but Tom immediately said they they were out of it, so we were bummed about that.
I ordered Nutella banana beignets, but unfortunately, nutella pancakes came out. Tom realized it right away and said that that would be in the house, and the beignets were on the way. My family and I shared everything so we could see how all the food was. It all looked good, but this was not the case for us. The pancakes were still raw in the center, and after we all had one bite, we didn't eat the rest. I didn't bother saying anything since it was "on the house" anyway.
We ordered Brioche French Toast and another meal called Don't Be a Chicken. For both orders, the corn bread came out ahead of time. The corn bread looks amazing, but taste... even with all the butter they had in it, it was so dry. I couldn't quite place what seasoning was in it, but something seemed to throw off the taste big time. We all did not like it, and the corn bread went to waste. The 2 meals were way too much food. Each plate could have fed 3-4 people. I'm a big guy and eat quite a bit, but the amount was overkill. This food is not the kind of food you want to be taking as leftovers either. I think maybe if there was more emphasis put into the flavor of the food rather than the large portions, that could help.
2 of us ordered Chupacabra, and after getting a sample of the corn bread, I immediately regretted getting what I got. Chupacabra is their corn bread with birria on top. Let me tell you, the birria didn't have much flavor to begin with, and it did not help the cornbread at all. Another meal we did not like.
I'm sorry to say Tom was a bad waiter. While we were there, I saw him waiting, cooking, making drinks, behind the register, and sweating so bad he was dripping sweat all over. There were a few other waiters/waitresses, but all the rest looked and acted friendly. His attitude didn't belong. I love how the place looks, but I can't ever see us coming back here ever again. With all the different food we had, the best thing...
Read moreWe decided to give The Buttered Biscuit a try on our way home from a camping trip. Needless to say I was starving by the time we arrived around noon. There were a few groups waiting in the entryway, with all visible tables being used. We put our name on the list and she told us it would be just a few minutes.
While waiting we ordered drinks from the small bar we were standing by. I got the Hawaiian Mimosa, my boyfriend got the regular mimosa. Both tasted good. His came with a Twinkie and fruit for garnish, mine came with a piece of pineapple and gummy frogs. I quickly ate his Twinkie as an appetizer. We watched several tables depart and get cleaned up, a few groups got seated. We stood there for about 10 more minutes with 3 open tables before being seated.
We sat down with our mimosas and waited about 10 more minutes for menus. We decided and waited to place our order. When the server came to take our order she asked about the mimosas, if we paid at the bar, and we requested to have some water to drink. The server was friendly.
We waited quite a bit for our food. It seemed like maybe we ordered right as the cooks went on break because we didn’t see any food come out for about 20ish minutes. We were then served our “biscuit.” It was piping hot, fresh out of the oven, smothered with butter. And delicious- corn bread. I was informed by my boyfriend that some people consider corn bread biscuits so I suppose my disappointment that it wasn’t a fluffy, flaky biscuit were in unwarranted. I’ll say it again, it was delicious!! The crust was crunchy, the inside soft and moist. It made me question the need for the side of pancakes I ordered. The table next to us got freezer jelly with their biscuit but we did not and never had the chance to ask for any before our food got delivered.
I got the Chicken Little, he got the Grandpa Breakfast. The gravy was really good. The chicken fried steak was good too, crispy and flavorful. Over easy eggs were good. The spuds were deep fried potatoes with onions and peppers in them, my boyfriend was not impressed. I had the corned beef hash with my meal. The flavor was good but the texture was mushy, definitely not something I’d order again. The pancake was fluffy and big. We did have lots of leftovers to bring home, which our kids quickly devoured without complaint.
Overall: food was pretty good, mimosas were fun, service was slow but friendly & kind. Glad we tried it, but being that it’s quite far from us we probably will...
Read moreThis is the best mega breakfast I’ve had in quite a while. Stopped about a month ago at the recommendation of a friend. The guy uses a manual wheelchair for mobility and had eaten there before so we stopped for a bite.
The place looked pretty rustic and niche at first blush. That didn’t change. The first thing you notice is the huge wet bar that almost takes up the entire waiting area…my kind of brunch place. The next thing you notice is the laid back staff. One of the waiters with a passing resemblance to Quint from the movie Jaws wore a “Surprise - I’m Drunk” t-shirt.
The decor was a combination of a hunting lodge and Thai temple with dark recesses and eclectic art hanging from the rafters…a lot of dark purple, turquoise and gold leaf. I’m not sure if there were Buddhas…maybe.
We were seated at a group table and a couple was promptly set up at the same. Eaves dropping, I heard the lady say, “Look, there’s one! We gotta get that.” She was referring to what looked like a huge square of steaming corn bread dripping in butter. My buddy said it was pretty popular but he’d never got one and I WAS THERE FOR BISCUITS AND SAUSAGE GRAVY, so I had to pass on the local favorite. The menu had everything you could possibly want in a brunch place, including mimosas, bloodies and screwdrivers, but NO SAUSAGE GRAVY.
Instead they had CREAMED BEEF. I was immediately disappointed. SOS: S?!T on a Shingle? What is this BOOT CAMP? I started looking at the Benedict platters instead…but at the last second I decided on the creamed beef and biscuits w/potatoes, eggs with cheese and Cholula.
It was was incredibly good. Everything was incredibly good. Our waiter, who had a passing resemblance to Bruce Dern told us the place had been reopened recently after a fire or flood or something. We started talking and he sat down with us as we finished our meal.
The experience was fun. The place was COOL. The food was way above average in quality, presentation and flavor. I got family coming to town next week and The Buttered Biscuit is high on our short list of restaurant experiences for their visit. This isn’t standard fare but it’s not super fancy either. It is a great dining option off the...
